@TMPracing •CAYUGA, ON – August 24 – Just because summer is coming to a close does not mean the exciting action is closing up on the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.
Funny Cars, Jet Dragsters, and the best wheelstanding touring series of Stockers are just some of the highlights that will take to the quarter-mile drag strip September 2 – 4 for the track’s Canadian Funny Car Championships.
The NDRA Funny Cars will make their final appearance at the track for 2016, and the points race right now is a tight one with series champ Tyler Scott in the Welland-based Kardiac Kids entry just ahead of London’s Dylan Hache. But a couple of other teams could spoil the day for Hache and Scott. With a multitude of NHRA and IHRA class wins, Paul Noakes will be on hand to set the pace in his first Canadian appearance. Noakes, from London, has recorded a personal best of 5.51 seconds at 267 mph, and with those numbers could make him the pack leader. Also the Ant Hill Mob from Ayr will be debuting a new Mustang Funny Car with Aiden Heatley-Smith at the wheel.
Other NDRA teams include the New York State teams of Vince Rastelli and Chris Zagoda, and Lyle Williams of Strathroy.
The Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series will return to Cayuga for their second time this year with two full races planned. This popular and long-running series features some of the best wheelstanding starts off the line anywhere, and the points race is a tight one to date. Leading the series is Welland’s Tony Valerio with 25 points, just three ahead of second-place Chuck Nagy of Niagara, with Pt. Colborne’s Rob Becker close in third with 21 points.
Lighting up the track will be the Jet Dragsters of Neale Armstrong and Lou Perira with their Terminator and Northern Warrior entries for several runs throughout the weekend.
There will also be two rounds in the Race Cayuga Sportsman Series, which features a variety of classes from Quick Sportsman to Junior Dragster, and a full compliment of ET Bracket racing will fill out the race card.
Racing begins Friday September 2 with a Cayuga’s “Friday Night Take it to the Track” session, then time trials begin Saturday September 3 at 10 am. The pro classes and jets will run three qualifying sessions beginning at 4 pm, with more time trials Sunday starting at 10 am, while final eliminations are set for 1 pm.
An adult (13 and up) weekend pass which includes camping is available for $70. Friday adult admission is $15, Saturday is $40 per adult, and Sunday is $30 adult. Children 12 and under are free.
The Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park has provided racing since 1954, and is the oldest operational drag strip in Canada. The quarter-mile drag strip is just one performance venue at the Park, which also features a three-kilometer road course for auto and motorcycle competition, Dream Car Experience, track lapping, testing, and media opportunities.
