PETERBOROUGH, ON- For the second time this season, OSCAAR Super Late Model championship contender Kevin Cornelius saw an impressive finish slip through his fingers due to mechanical failure.
The Shelburne, ON veteran appeared strong in Round 7 of the tour at Peterborough Speedway on August 2nd, leading through the midway portion of the 50-lap contest before slowing on lap-36 due to a blown power steering hose.
“We had an awesome car today”, said a visibly disappointed Cornelius post-race. “These guys deserved a win today, because we had the car to beat. This KDR Motorsports team just gets better and better. We just can’t seem to kick these mechanical gremlins”
“For us to lose a power steering hose twice in one season is pretty wild, but we’re not going to let it get us down. There’s a short turn around before Round 8 at Kawartha, so we don’t have the time to pout. We just have to get back in the shop and make this car faster”
The 12th place finish kept Cornelius from gaining ground on tour point leader Andrew Gresel, though Cornelius insists the championship standings are not a distraction for the Super Late Model freshman.
“We haven’t been points racing all season”, explained Cornelius. “We’re approaching this season one race at a time. I’m racing for my team. I’d love to earn as many wins as we can. The points can work themselves out, but I’m not worried about them”
“We’re 2nd in points with 5 races left. And if our championship run is over, that’s fine with me, because we’ll be heading into every one of those events racing for a win. My team didn’t get the results they deserved today, so hopefully I can make it up to them at Kawartha”
Kevin Cornelius will be back in action this Sunday, August 10th in Round 8 of the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour at Kawartha Speedway. For details and ticket prices visit www.OSCAAR.ca.
