SHELBURNE, ON- Sophomore Super Late Model contender Kevin Cornelius will return to competition with the OSCAAR tour this Saturday, August 2nd at Peterborough Speedway. The former Limited Late Model champion currently finds himself in the midst of a 4-race podium streak, and hopes to pull closer to championship contention in Round 7 of the tour this weekend.
“I can’t say enough about this KDR Motorsports team and everything we’ve been through this season”, says Cornelius, “if you had asked me to draw you a picture of our season back in June, it would have looked a lot different than this”
After opening his season with mechanical difficulties in Rounds 1 and 2 of the tour, Cornelius has asserted himself in the race for the 2014 championship, working his way to 2nd in OSCAAR points.
Cornelius will head for Peterborough Speedway fresh off of a podium finish at Sauble in Round 6 of the tour on July 27th and hopes to earn his 3rd victory in 5 races.
“This has been a team effort”, explains Cornelius. “My guys give me an incredible setup every time out of the box, and Mike McColl builds the best racecars out there”
“We were happy with our performance at Sauble”, continues Cornelius. “Obviously, we would have loved to bring home the win, but when you consider the caliber of competition you’re racing against, it’s tough not to be happy with a 3rd place finish”
As the schedule begins to hit its fevered pitch, Cornelius is quick to explain that equipment preservation will be paramount at Peterborough.
“We’ve hit the portion of the schedule that really challenges you as a team. 3 races in as many weeks is a heavy workload. I have all the confidence in the world that we’ll have a car capable of contending for a win this weekend, but we have to be smart about it. It’s a quick turnaround before our next race at Kawartha, so we don’t want to abuse our equipment any more than we have to”
When asked if his current streak of top-3 finishes will serve as additional motivation, Cornelius explains that he remains focused on the same task he has been all season.
“I’m committed to giving my team the results they deserve. That’s all the motivation I need. My crew work long hours in the shop to get us ready for every one of these events, and they deserve to have a run they can be proud of”
“I really don’t pay much attention to statistics, to be honest”, admits Cornelius. “I think it’s easy for guys to lose focus when they start worrying about what the numbers say, or what kind of streak they’re on. I want to win a championship for my team, and I know that if I win as many races as I can, I’ll have a better chance at accomplishing that”.
