@PtboSpeedway – @McNicMotorsport – EXETER, ON – Delaware Speedway regular Kenny McNicol Jr. will return to Peterborough’s Autumn Colours Classic this weekend. The veteran will enter the perennially stacked Thunder Car division with hopes of carving out his first career ‘Classic’ victory.
“We’re fortunate enough to get to race quite a few big events over the course of the season, but nothing really compares to Peterborough,” says McNicol. “Delaware has the Great Canadian weekend and Sunset has the Velocity – and they’re awesome races – but there’s just something about the Autumn Colours Classic that takes you to that next level.”
McNicol is coming off of a Delaware Speedway weekly season that saw him earn a feature win and a top-5 finish in championship points standings, racing amongst one of the most talent-laden classes in the province.
“We had a great year at Delaware,” smiles the veteran. “Now we just need to transfer that over to Peterborough. It’s a much different game out there.”
“You have to have a lot of patience at Peterborough,” explains McNicol. “The corners are awfully tight. And there’s not a lot of room for passing. Throttle control comes into effect. It just takes a different style of driving altogether.”
Though McNicol is no stranger to competing against 20+ car fields on a nightly basis, it’s clear he has a deep-seated respect for the crowd of drivers that turns up for the 50-lap Thunder Car event during ‘Classic’ weekend.
“This is the most competitive field we race against all year long,” says McNicol matter-of-factly. “You’re running against the very best of the best. From every track in Ontario. If you’re lucky enough to make the A Main, you’re not trying to run down 1 or 2 fast cars, you’re out there competing against the 30 top cars in the division.”
When asked what a win on Sunday would mean to his family-run effort, McNicol is quick to explain that as long as he brings home a checkered flag, he’ll be happy.
“A win on Sunday would be incredible, but I think we’d be just as happy with a qualifier win,” laughs the veteran. “I’m not picky. I just want to get to victory lane.”
