WETASKIWIN, AB (July 27, 2019)- DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge finished up the annual western Canada portion of events on the 2019 NASCAR Pintys Series racing season at Edmonton International Raceway in Wetaskiwin, Alberta this past Saturday. Once again, the team showed plenty of speed and captured the fifth top-ten finish of the season.
On the heels of a podium finish just days ago in Saskatoon, Kennington posted the second fastest time in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge during the afternoon practice on the challenging oval that was shortened by rain showers.
“We unloaded and the car was very good right away” said Kennington. “Good work by the team being well prepared” he added.
Rain showers would wash out the normal qualifying session and according to the NASCAR rulebook drivers lined up based on practice speeds which put the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge on the outside of row one for the scheduled 300-lap feature event. Kennington maneuvered his way into the race lead on lap 14.
“It’s always nice to be out front but I didn’t want to be too aggressive in the early going so I settled into a comfortable pace” explained the driver.
As the first half of the race moved along the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was tight through the corners and not turning as well as Kennington would like. The team would make handling adjustments during the mandated mid-point break for fuel and tires.
With the completion of handling changes along with fuel and fresh tires to go the remaining distance Kennington was again on the charge in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge. Unfortunately, the adjustments made were a little too aggressive and the car became uncomfortable for the driver. After making another stop during a caution period for further changes Kennington did his best to recover and claimed a tenth-place finish when the race was ended by NASCAR on lap 275 due to recurring rain showers.
“It’s too bad we went a bit far on that change” summarized Kennington. “The Castrol Edge Dodge was really good early and on short runs, but we were being bold to try and give us a car for the win, but it didn’t quite work out. Hats off to the team for working hard all day and in tough conditions, this western trip is a tough one and they gave it their all” said Kennington.
DJ Kennington and the Castrol Edge Dodge team are back in action at the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres, in Trois Rivieres, QC.
