OSHAWA, ON- 2-time Canadian Tire Motorsport Park champion Willy Howells is set to shift gears in 2014, with a fulltime schedule planned for Friday night competition at Kawartha Speedway.
“We’re feeling like 2014 is going to be a game changer for us”, said Howells earnestly. “Our team excelled at CTMP, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish at Kawartha”
“It’s going to be a step up in competition, that’s for sure”, replied Howells on the topic of Kawartha’s talent-laden roster, “some of these drivers have been competing at Kawartha for longer than I’ve even been in the sport, so they’ll have a huge advantage. I’ll have to be a quick study, that’s for sure”
Despite the unfamiliar surroundings, Howells enters the season with a multitude of confidence, after back-to-back championships at the speedway formerly known as Mosport.
“I don’t have any doubt in my program, my equipment or my team”, explained Howells. “This season is all about me and how quickly I can adapt to a new speedway”
“Kawartha and Mosport aren’t radically different”, Howells continued, “so, we’re hoping there’s a few things that will be transferable. We’ve been to the top before, we know that we can do it again. It’s just going to be a case of putting everything together and making it work every time we back off the trailer”
In anticipation of Kawartha’s regular season opening night on June 6th, Howells entered the OSCAAR-sanctioned ‘Mini Stock Nationals’ event on June 1st to help get a better feel for the speedway.
“The Nationals was great because we were able to utilize it as an extended testing session”, said Howells. “We came home with a top-20 and have a much better idea of what direction we want to go in for opening night”
“Kawartha has a short schedule this season, so there’s no room for error. We’re going to have to pick up on this track right away. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling the pressure, but I know we can be a contender in this division”
Willy Howells’ will compete this season with support from Taunton Tire, Sanford Auto, Durham Autoworks, Roughley Insurance, Oshawa Community Credit Union, DiBello Towing, Auto Accessory World, Team Blue and Hobby Revolution.
