TYENDINAGA, ON (June 19, 2019)- Even in a family with a rich motorsport’s history, its up to each individual racer to carve their own niche at a particular racetrack. Following in the tire tracks of his cousin, uncle and father – who achieved varying levels of success in weekly action – Jonah Lewis is now making his mark in the DIRTcar Sportsman-Modified ranks.
The 23-year-old from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory – who is employed as a union ironworker and volunteer firefighter – spent some time in a Thunder Stock at Brighton Speedway before advancing to the Rookie Sportsman field and now his current ride. The young wheelman who attended Moira Secondary School and Loyalist College in Belleville says he likes meeting new people and visiting some of the different tracks where his racing travels will take him.
“Whether in the shop or at the speedway, we work hard on the car and have a great time when we get to the track,” said Jonah Lewis “Looking at the big picture, my long-term goal is to eventually win a track championship, but I’m still learning what these cars are all about and how to read some of the changing conditions. Whenever we race, we make sure to take some detailed notes and the team tries to come away from the experience knowing a little bit more than when we started the night.”
Throughout the early stages of his inaugural campaign in the division, Lewis and the #73J team are keeping their focus on the weekly Saturday night action at Brockville Ontario Speedway, where he cracked the top 5 and managed to record a career best 4th place finish Saturday, June 1st. The crew of car owner Trevor Lewis, Donny Lewis, Jamie Lewis, Holden Lewis and Jeff Holmes has also put its equipment to the test during a show at Can Am Speedway in April. The driver lists Brockville and Mohawk International Raceway as a couple of his favourite tracks. He’d also like to run a show at the Charlotte, NC. dirt track.
“We’ll probably hit the road for some of the season-ending Mr. DIRTcar Championship Trail events,” said the driver who enjoys hunting, fishing, hockey and golf in his spare time. “There are dates Friday, September 20th and Saturday, September 21st at Brighton, so it’ll be great to be able to race less than an hour from my front door.”
For the 2019 season, Jonah Lewis’ DIRTcar Sportsman-Modified program is proudly supported by Village Variety & Gas Bar, Quinte Trade Services, Mohawk Vehicle Protection, Turnin’ Wrenches Garage, The Work Gear and The Vinyl Solution.
