QUEENSVILLE, ON- After spending much of the first half of 2015 grappling with a new setup, Jason ‘Bam Bam’ Witty has reverted back to a package similar to what he utilized through his wildly successful 2014 campaign. Now, he’s scored two wins in as many weeks and is eager to keep his No. 19 at the front of the Sunset Speedway Late Model field.
“At the beginning of the season, we got too far away from what made this car so good last year,” explains Witty. “We tried to work with our new package but realized we had to take a step backwards in order to go forward”
“It’s taken some time, but right now we’re very happy with what we have,” continues the second-generation racer. “Obviously, we’re still tweaking and changing some of the little things, but the base that we’re working from is something that we have a lot of confidence in”
With victories in each of his previous two appearances at the speedway, it’s clear Witty is feeling the shot of momentum that his team has been working towards since the season-opener in May.
Tonight, Witty is likely to again find himself pitted against multi-time feature winner Taylor Holdaway, whom he’s dueled with in each of his two wins this year, current point-leader Dwayne Baker and fellow championship hopeful Gord Shepherd.
“Every Saturday is better when you win,” beams the affable veteran. “Two in a row is nice, but three would be even better. Taylor [Holdaway] is really good right now, but he’s not unbeatable – he’s just a man. Any one on this roster can be beat. It’s not easy. But it’s possible”
Witty’s recent success has made a huge difference in the current Sunset Speedway points standings, and the Queensville, ON veteran will enter tonight’s event second in Late Model points – just 2 markers back of leader Dwayne Baker.
“I try my best to keep my eyes off the points standings, but the boys tell me that we’ve made some headway in the last two weeks,” laughs Witty. “When you’re putting these hours in – that’s always encouraging to hear. So, we’re going to get back at it tonight and keep our foot to the firewall”
“The car’s been good and the boys have been working hard. We have as much of a chance as anyone to win one tonight. But, no matter what happens, the beer will be cold when it’s all said and done.”
Details for tonight’s event – featuring a pre-race autograph session as part of Fan Appreciation Night – can be found at www.SunsetSpeedway.ca.
