NEW HAMBURG, ON- Thirteen-year old sophomore Jake Watson is gearing up for a busy two nights of racing at Sunset Speedway. The Mini Stock division up-and-comer will compete in a pair of feature events on Saturday and Sunday that pay full points towards the 2014 division championship, and could change the scope of the division as a whole.
“There’s a lot on the line this weekend, two points paying events in one weekend is a pretty big deal”, explained Watson.
“You have to be real careful with how you race Saturday night, because if you don’t have a car left for Sunday you’ll be giving up a tonne of points”, said the third-generation star.
‘The Derringer’ hopes to re-enter the top-10 in points in a tightly packed and talent-laden Mini Stock division.
“This weekend is going to give us the perfect shot to pick up a few spots in the championship standings. We had a bad night early in July, and we lost a few spots because of it. We’ve been able to work our way back up, and these two events will help us with that”
“Everything is so tight in this division, if you make a mistake you definitely pay for it”, remarked Watson. “From 1st to 15th is really, really close. You’ll definitely see some changes by the time this weekend is over”.
When speaking about the parity in Sunset’s Mini Stock division, Watson makes sure to note just how much he’s learned since migrating to the Innisfil, ON oval in the Spring.
“Racing at Sunset has taught me more than I ever thought it would”, said the former Karting regular.
“The drivers here are so talented, and there’s so much competition. You really have to fight for every single spot. It doesn’t matter if it’s a qualifying heat race or a 35-lap feature, if you want a position you’re going to have to work for it. It takes a lot of discipline to find success here”
