May 13, 2013- It turned out to be a great day at the track on Saturday night at Brockville Speedway as Jon Mills and the Hot Lick Racing team made their 2013 season debut. Not only was it exciting because of the opening night, it was also exciting, because the team had 8-year-old Tyler McDonald as a guest, helping him raise money for Team Tyler’s Relay for Life.
On the track, Mills started his qualifying heat race from the third position, and maintained that spot throughout the eight lap event. In the 25 lap feature, Jon started from the 12th position, but a flat tire in the opening laps sent them to the pits under caution. He restarted the race from the 26th position, and steadily progressed through the field. As the dust settled at the end of the night, Mills was back up to 11th place.
Throughout the evening, The Hot Lick Racing girls helped collect donations from fellow racers and fans. Tyler also got to take a lap around the track with Jon in the racecar. The donations that were collected during the course of the night added up to more than $1700.
“We got marred back deep in the field after getting a flat tire on lap three”, says Mills. “The car was pretty good, and we were able to pass a lot of cars and salvage an ok finish. If we had the track position, I think we could have been a top five car. We were really happy to give Tyler a night to remember here at the track, and raise some money for Team Tyler”.
Tyler McDonald was diagnosed with a brainstem gilcoma (Brain Cancer) on March 4th, 2011. At the time, he was given a year to live, but has beet the odds, now over two years since the original diagnosis and going strong. Tyler will not receive any treatment as chemo cannot get to the brainstem and radiation only buys a few months, but causes a lot of side effects. Tyler currently suffers from constant headaches and dizziness. Some days Tyler cannot walk as the tumor presses on certain parts of his nerves.
