GRAND BEND, ON – Fans of Grand Bend Speedway are “On the Chip!” for this weekend’s big racing event. The Lucas Oil Can-Am Midget Club will descend upon the Bull Ring by the Beach this weekend for the first of two appearances, and what promises to be a very exciting and action packed event.
Brian’s Service Centre, EZ Building Products, D & D Glass, and Broadway Service Present Saturday’s race program, which includes a regular race program for the weekly divisions. In 2012, London ON driver, Darren McLennan [#48] swept the two dates at Grand Bend Speedway on his way to a successful season. McLennan, a former weekly competitor at Grand Bend, considers the speedway as his home track and usually brings a number of fans to cheer on his efforts.
Grand Bend Speedway offers its share of challenges. David Balych [#12] offered his insight recently, and commented on how 90% of the time is spent turning, which offers little, to no rest for the drivers. Two time Sunset Speedway event winner and former JCAR Mini Truck Champion Corey Moesker [#39] calls Grand Bend a very technical track compared to most on their schedule. Dissimilar turns on either end, makes it difficult to come up with a set p that allows these winged warriors to rotate through the different corners.
Balych notes that they tend to run more gear then most tracks to allow engines to rev up quicker, and stand the overhead wings straight up to assist with all the turning on the corners and back dogleg. Moesker comments that it is important to set the car up to be able to come off the corners low, as it’s the only way to pass.
Moesker and Balych both have had various degrees of success at Grand Bend Speedway. Balych remembers a satisfying heat race win after pounding the wall during pre-race practice. Moesker had a brilliant run in the July event in 2011. Moesker, recalls starting the feature race in last place, and driving up through the field to finish 2nd. At the time was a career best finish. Both drivers are looking forward to steal the broom from McLennan this year.
