INNISFIL, ON- Ridge Road Racing representative Gord Shepherd made the most of a Barrie Speedway rainout on August 30th, entering his second Sunset Speedway Ltd. Late Model event of the season and working his way to a 7th place finish in a talent-laden field.
“It was a bit of a last-minute decision on our part, and it worked out great”, smiled Shepherd post-race. “Barrie wasn’t able to get their show in due to some thunderstorms in the area, so we figured it would be a solid Plan B to come down to Sunset and have some fun”
‘The Smoke’ has made clear his intentions to compete at Sunset Speedway’s 75-lap ‘Velocity Weekend’ invitational on September 27th & 28th, and saw an opportunity to log some vital practice laps with the Sunset regulars on August 30th.
“Sunset is a difficult track to get a handle on, and any time you have an opportunity to log some laps there, it’s a solid investment of your time”, said Shepherd.
“We were running on old tires tonight, and still found a lot of speed in the car”, continued the veteran. “That’s certainly a shot in the arm when we’re looking at coming back to race here at the end of September”
With a solid performance at Sunset in hand, Shepherd and team will now set their sights on their return to Barrie Speedway on September 13th – to settle the 2014 Ltd. Late Model championship. If Shepherd can clinch the title, it will mark their second in a row and third in the last four seasons.
“The season hasn’t been without its ups-and-downs, but I can’t say enough about my guys”, said Shepherd. “This team has worked its heart out to put us in a position to race for the championship this year”
“We have a healthy lead in the points, but we’re still looking to finish on a high note. There’s nothing I want more than to win a championship and a couple of feature races in the same night”
