EDMONTON, Alberta (June 21, 2013) – It is no longer just a race. After a decade of competition and extreme thrills the likes of which you won’t find anywhere else in the country, the annual Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports has become more of pilgrimage.
Drivers, crews and fans travel from all corners of North America to compete in Canada’s biggest drag race and that excitement will continue this season with the 11th edition of the Rocky Mountain Nationals to be held July 5-7 at legendary Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.
And this year’s event promises to be one of the biggest yet
“This is ‘the big one’ when it comes to drag racing and Canada. For over a decade now the IHRA has traveled to Castrol Raceway with a show unlike any other and this year will be no different,” said Aaron Polburn, President of IHRA Motorsports. “Every year we circle this event on the calendar as ‘the’ event and once again we look forward to traveling to Edmonton with our unique brand of motorsports entertainment and putting on a show that will continue the great tradition of Rocky Mountain Nationals before it.”
The 2013 Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports will feature a unique lineup of professional and sportsman competition totaling hundreds of racers in over a dozen different classes all spread over three days of thrilling drag racing action with Ironman trophies being handed out Saturday and Sunday. The event features one of the most unique assortments of race vehicles and classes found anywhere in motorsports.
In professional competition the Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals will feature five classes highlighted by the 320 mile per hour stars of Top Fuel Dragster. Former Edmonton winners Bruce Litton and Bobby Lagana will renew their on-track rivalry for the first time in 2013, joining Kyle Wurtzel and Canadian Ike Maier.
A full field of Canada’s fastest nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars will be on display as three-time defending Rocky Mountain Nationals winner and Edmonton native Tim Boychuk returns in the “Troy Lee Designs” Pontiac to try and defending his AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car title. He will be joined by three-time IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Paul Romine who has come out of retirement to compete at this event piloting the “Power Steel” Camaro owned by southern Arizona team owner Jim Broome. Broome will also bring with him the world-famous “Candies & Hughes” Barracuda making for one of the most exciting Funny Car competitions of the year.
Rounding out the event will be a full field of Nitro Harleys, the famous Nostalgia Fuel Altereds of “Nanook” driven by Kyle Hough, “Rat Trap” driven by Ron Hope, “Nasty Benjamin” driven by Tom Padilla and “Bradford’s Fiat” driven by Randy Bradford and the fan-favorite Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car class featuring unique body styles and wild racing.
Bringing the show to a close will be a unique exhibition featuring an Alcohol Funny Car showdown, the 30,000 horsepower Super Shockwave jet-powered truck, Mike Kunz’s wheelstanding PT Cruiser, jet dragsters and more!
Fireworks and an incredible pyrotechnics display will close the evening.
In sportsman competition the International Hot Rod Association’s Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL will feature seven traveling classes in Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod and Hot Rod plus Top ET, Mod ET and Junior Dragsters. Racers in Pro-Am competition within IHRA’s Border Bandits Division will battle in two separate races Saturday and Sunday.
Defending winners of the Division 6 Summit Pro-Am at Castrol Raceway are Darryn O’Conner and Randy Modersohn (Top Sportsman), Tom McAvoy and Donna Patterson (Top Dragster), Art Congdon (Super Stock), Tom Skjonsberg and Mark Faul (Stock), Eric Goulden (Quick Rod), Jeff Crooks and Dave Stobbe (Super Rod) and Casey Plazier (Hot Rod).
