WINNIPEG, MB (June 17, 2013)- Wally Butler continued his streak of preparing bullet-fast race cars and being rewarded with checkered flags, as he won his first Northern Lightning Sprint Association feature of the 2013 season at Red River Co-op Speedway on Monday night.
Starting on the front row of the NLSA’s lone heat race, Butler launched his 35W Lightning Sprint into turn 1 and never looked back as he distanced himself from pole sitter Chris Unrau. The best battle of the heat was between the #29 of Dylan Sabatini and the #1 of Chris Sorin. From sixth, Sorin worked his way up the field to get within striking distance of third place Sabatini.
The battle for third was intense, including both cars splitting the lapped car of first-time Lightning Sprint driver Brandon Rehill in the 4B car. With 2 laps remaining, Sorin finally made the pass and went on to finish in third place behind Wally Butler and Chris Unrau.
In the NLSA feature, front row starter Edward Bell took the early lead and appeared to have a good run over Wally Butler who was in hot pursuit. A yellow flag came out when the #27 sprint of Chris Unrau started smoking down the backstretch. Unrau’s night was over.
On the restart, Edward Bell once again lead the field into turn 1, but not for long as Butler closed in and passed Bell two laps later. This was all Wally Butler needed to start distancing himself from the rest of the field.
Eric Klassen, who was driving the #13 Lighting Sprint regularly driven by Al Giesbrecht pulled off into the infield.
At the midway point of the race, contact between the #1 of Chris Sorin and the #29 of Dylan Sabatini resulted in damage to Sabatini’s sprint and he was also done for the night.
On the restart, leader Wally Butler headed for wide open spaces and he checked out on the remaining cars. Chris Sorin would make one more pass, this time on Edward Bell to grab second place.
When the checkered flag waved, it was Wally Butler celebrating a victory on this night.
Rounding up the top four were Edward Bell, Brandon Rehill and Chris Sorin.
Despite a spirited second place run, due to a restart infraction, Chris Sorin was penalized and moved back two positions, to finish in fourth place.
The next scheduled racing action for the NLSA will be Monday, June 24 at Red River Co-op Speedway. Start time is 7:30pm.
