Bowmanville, ON- When the motor expired in Darren Kearnan’s #46 Modified halfway through the July 6 feature race, Techtonix Ontario Modified Racing Series points leader Dwight Brown went into ‘cruise mode’ and secured his third consecutive feature victory of the season on the half-mile Speedway of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
“I managed to get through traffic quicker than Darren at the start, but once he got clear, I saw that he was catching me,” noted Brown. “Then, all of a sudden he was gone. I had been pushing as hard as I could and he was still gaining. If he hadn’t run into problems it would have been a pretty good race.”
While Brown enjoyed an “uneventful” run to the checkered flag, each of his Techtonix OMRS rivals found themselves involved in hard-fought battles for position.
In the chase for the runner-up spot, Chad Strawn (#77s) and rookie Nick Lees (#09) exchanges places multiple times over the course of the 25 lap feature, Strawn eventually securing the position with five-to-go, edging Lees by a single car length at the stripe.
Only slightly further adrift, the trio of Bill Pickford (#61), Rick Warnes (#90), and Rob Warnes (#95) were engaged in a race-long, high-speed scramble. Pickford was ultimately able to hold on to fourth place, while the father and son tandem swapped places on the final lap, Rick Warnes closing out the contest with a top five result, son Rob trailing him by a mere car’s length.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a more frustrating race,” admitted Rob Warnes. “I’d get a run on Bill (Pickford) coming out of the corner, but then he’d pull me down the straight. I got so focused on finding a way past Bill, I forgot that the #90 car was fast, too.”
The “down on power” #77 of Brad Stevenson was next to the checkered flag, followed by rookie Ryan Dick (#88) and the #62 of Randy Hollingsworth.
The Ontario Modified Racing Series powered by Techtonix Construction close out their CTMP Speedway appearances with back-to-back dates on July 20 and 27. Further details, points standings and race results can be found on the OMRS website, www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com.
