BROCKVILLE, ON – Matt Billings put two and two together faster than anyone else on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. The hometown hero figured out half through the 30 lap 358 Modified feature that the high side was the fastest way around the Beast of the East and the result was his first win of 2012.
Kyle Dingwall was the dominant care in the early going of the event. Dingwall worked through the field in a hurry to grab the top spot and looked to be the car to beat until lapped cars, restarts and a slowing inside groove all combined after the halfway mark. Billings who had been closing in on the 66 lap after lap used the final restart and the high lane to his advantage to take the lead and run away with the victory. Dale Planck made some late moves to grab 3rd in the competitive field ahead of Tim O Brien and Lee Gill.
There was a new face in Sportsman victory lane for the first time in 2012. Brockville’s Dylan Evoy came back from a blown engine a week ago to end Chris Herbison’s winning streak at 3, dating back to last October. The Brockville teenager also made a number of his moves through taffic on the highside taking the top spot from early leader Sheldon Hoogwerf around the midway mark. Herbison, who started near the back rallied for second in front of Kenny Polite, Hoogwerf and late charger Jessica Power.
Another barn burner finish took place in the Street Stock 15 lap main. Quebec driver Alain Proulx led every lap but had to deal with numerous challenges especially with defending track champ Kevin Fetterly Jr, knocking on his door on the final circuit. Brock Cullen was a strong third, with Derrick Eaton and Travis Andrews rounding out the fast five. Dwight Feltham of Kingston took Rookie honours withstanding a late charge from Quincy Roberts for the win. John Stanley, Josh Kirkland and Chris Bakker were third through fifth respectively. Brian Comeau scored his second career win in the Vintage event outdistancing Jason Powers, Peter Stapper, Steve Lackies and Denzil Billings Jr. Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action, next Saturday night, June 2nd with a full race program plus the vintage cars once again. The green flag drops at 7pm.
