ACTON, ON- Despite an uncharacteristically slow start to the 2014 season, Mini Stock ace Brandon McFerran is in the midst of a career year, including a current hot streak that has taken him to the top of Sunset Speedway’s Mini Stock division.
The third-generation driver – a graduate of the heralded Waterloo Regional Kart Club – has tallied a pair of victories and a runner-up finish in his last three starts, capturing the Mini Stock division point lead as the 2014 season hits its halfway point.
“We didn’t get off to the start that we were hoping for”, admitted McFerran, “but the last month has been incredible. I can’t say enough about my Dad and Tim Ellas. They put their hearts and souls into this car to get it to work the way it does”
At just 15-years of age, McFerran readily admits he’s still learning and improving, and has shown a degree of maturity in approaching his third full season of Mini Stock competition.
“The best lesson I learned last season is that I’m not going to win every race I enter. Now, I show up every week just hoping to be in the conversation at the end of the race. If I can finish near the front, it’s a good night”
“When I remind myself of that, it lets me just go out and race. The less pressure I put on myself, the better I perform”
‘The Astronaut’s on-track improvement was evident in his most recent outing on July 5th, when the Acton, ON driver took a dominating victory at Sunset – lapping 15 cars and enjoying a lead of over 3 seconds on his closest pursuer at the checkered flag.
“Top to bottom, I feel as though that was my best performance ever”, remarked McFerran with a smile. “We started in the 5th row and had the lead by lap-7. I couldn’t believe how well the car hooked up. It made my job feel easy”
“I’m at the point now where the goal every Saturday is to come out and not make a mistake. I’ve made a tonne of wrong moves over the last 3 seasons, but I like to think that I’ve learned from all of them. If I can keep learning from my mistakes, and keep putting together solid finishes, I think we might be able to take a run at our first ever championship”
