INNISFIL, ON- Following a dominant feature victory on May 2nd, defending Mini Stock champion Brandon McFerran returned to action on May 9th, tearing through the field for a 5th place finish.
The third-generation star – by virtue of his Week 1 win – started 16th on the grid in the 25-lap affair.
“Man they don’t make it easy on you when you’re coming off a win,” smiled a visibly exhausted McFerran post-race. “This field gets better every single week. I can’t remember the last time we had to work this hard for a fifth place finish”
‘The Astronaut’ spent much of the race’s first half mired in traffic, running three-wide just outside of the top-10.
“Everyone is so evenly matched here that it’s really tough to get something going in traffic,” explained the defending champion. “Until someone slips up, there really isn’t a move to make. When you start trying to push the envelope – that’s when you can get yourself torn up”
“Instead of loading our car in pieces – I figured it was best to just bide my time and ride it out”
McFerran’s patient strategy proved effective, as he worked his way into the top-5 with less than 10-laps remaining.
“We just had to tip-toe our way through some of the danger spots,” said McFerran. “The car was working awesome. It was actually getting better as the race went on. By the time it really started to turn, we had already run out of laps”
Despite ending his evening off of the podium, McFerran remained content with what his family-run team accomplished in Week 2 of the season.
“My guys gave me an awesome car tonight, I was really proud of this whole team. Obviously, we would have liked to win – but we still passed a ton of cars in one of the best divisions around”
“This was a really good points night for us, and putting those together is what we’re looking to do this season. The car is in one piece and we learned a lot about our setup for the second week in a row”
“We’ll go home and look over our notes, and see what we have to do to come back next weekend and win the Spring Velocity.”
