@NewHumberstone • PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… James Michael Friesen from St. Catharines, Ontario was the winner of the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman main event on Davidson Line Marking and Property Maintenance Night at the New Humberstone Speedway on Mother’s Day.
Dennis Lunger Jr from Albion, Pennsylvania picked up his second straight feature win for the Pinty’s Delicious Foods RUSH Late Models while Port Colborne, Ontario’s Jason Fontaine won his second feature of the season in the JC Auto Street Stocks. Welland, Ontario’s Kyle Rothwell won the feature event for the Cosco Haulage Mini Stocks. Mike Toovey from St. Catharines, Ontario earned the victory for the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks. Mark Shadwell from Hamilton, Ontario picked up the feature win in the Vintage Cars. Evan Curtis won the spectator one-on-one event.
James Michael Friesen (JMF) took off from his pole starting position and went into the lead during the opening circuit of the 25 lap feature event for the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman. While Friesen started to open up his lead, Brad Rouse and Gary Lindberg would battle for third place with Lindberg getting the advantage near lap five. While battling for position inside the top five, Rouse and Robert Baker came together to bring out the races first caution. On the restart, Lindberg would get passed Adam Leslie for second and began to chase down the race leader Friesen. While the leaders would get away from the field, Cody McPherson would race his way into the top five and began pressuring the leaders. After Jordan Cosco came to a rest on the top of turn four to bring out the caution on lap 19, Friesen would pull away on the restart. Friesen would then go on to collect the win.
Jorden Peters had the jump on the field in the start of the Pinty’s Delicious Foods Rush Late Models, Dennis Lunger Jr, opening night’s feature winner moved into second off the start and then would go to work on race leader Peters. Lunger would pass Peters for the race lead on lap five. While Lunger opened up his lead over the field, Peters and Rob Pietz would battle for several laps for second place. Pietz and Peters would battle for much of the second half of the race as well with Pietz getting the advantage late. Lunger would pull away to collect his second win of the season at Humberstone.
Lee Winger and Mike Greene brought the JC Auto Street Stocks to the green with Winger getting the race lead. Jason Fontaine and Winger battled for several laps for the lead with Fontaine finally getting the advantage near the halfway mark. Then Chris Crawford would get around Winger after a well-fought battle to take second place away just after the cross flags was displayed to the field. Then Crawford would begin to chase down Fontaine but Fontaine would pull away and hold off Crawford and defending Rookie of the Year Kyle Pelrine to score his second win of the season.
Kyle Rothwell and Len Wiley were on the front row for the 15 lap Cosco Haulage Mini Stocks feature event with Wiley showing the way. Rothwell regained the lead on lap three after Wiley suffered a flat right front tire. Rothwell pulled away from Jason Coutu with opening night’s feature winner Rob Goulding and Kyle Haynes battling for positions two through five for the balance of the race. Rothwell would go on to pick up the feature win.
Craig Vlasic and Mike Toovey led the field to green with Toovey leading the opening circuit. Toovey and veteran racer Danny Wurster for much of the balance of the 15 lap affair with Toovey getting the advantage and going on to pick up the win. Wurster would settle for a second place finish and was followed by Dillon Llord.
Conrad Baker and Mark Shadwell led the field of Vintage Cars to the green flag with Shadwell jumping into the race lead. Al Harju went underneath Baker to take over second early on in the main event. Harju and Baker came together in turn one to bring out the races first caution on lap seven. Shadwell pulled away from the field to pick up the feature win.
PORT NOTES: With rain surrounding the area for much of the day, officials made sure that the entire program was completed before the rains came. All events including the spectator one-on-one race was completed before 9:00pm. Car Count Report for May 10: 18 Sportsman, 9 Late Models, 10 Street Stocks, 7 Pro 4 Trucks, 11 Mini Stocks, and 6 Vintage Cars for a total of 61 racers pitside.
Racing resumes at Humberstone next Sunday May 17th for the John Puhl Memorial Night. Zanchin Truck and Trailer presents a full card of racing plus the first visit of the season by the Southern Ontario Sprints. Fireworks will cap off the night as we celebrate Victoria Day weekend. Gates will swing open at 4:30pm with racing starting at 6:30pm sharp.
