BAKERSFIELD, CA- After several weeks spent removed from the Lucas Oil Modified Series due to scheduling conflicts, freshman Blaine Perkins will be back with the tour as it rolls into his home track – Irwindale Speedway.
“I think every racer perks up a little bit when a tour like this rolls into their home track,” grins Perkins. “All of our experience with this series has been about adapting to new tracks and working to get our feet underneath us on the road. It’s going to be a nice change to be at a facility that we’re comfortable with. This Saturday, we can put all of our focus into making the car better – as opposed to learning the track itself”
Though Perkins has not seen the cockpit of a Modified in several weeks, it doesn’t mean he hasn’t found other rides to keep busy with.
“Between our [SPEARS] SRL [Southwest Tour] debut and our weekly Irwindale Late Model program, we’ve been racing almost every weekend,” explains the 15-year old. “I just want to stay as sharp as possible”
“When Mom, Dad and I sat down at the beginning of the year and sketched out our schedule, we wanted to try and hit as many different divisions and series as possible. So far, we’ve managed to do that”
“It’s all about trying to be as well-rounded as possible,” adds the likeable rookie with a smile.
For Perkins, a bevy of Irwindale Speedway experience presents a unique opportunity for a breakout performance against a maddeningly difficult Lucas Oil Modified Series field.
“I’m blown away by how good these guys are,” admits Perkins. “I mean – the absolute best of the best. When you’re in one of these cars, you have to work for every single inch – because no one is going to hand you anything”
“I give up a ton of experience to the drivers on this roster at every other speedway that we visit on the tour,” continues Perkins, “which is why I’m so excited for Saturday at Irwindale. It’s going to be a nice change to have a small advantage”
“Hopefully we can put a show on for our home track fans.”
