MORDEN, MB (June 2, 2013) The Northern Lightning Sprint Association kicked off their 5th anniversary season at ALH Motor Speedway on a beautiful Manitoba Sunday afternoon and they did it with a bang.
3-time Northern Lightning Sprint Association champion, Roland Bernard has made a reputation of figuring out the fastest way to the front of a field of cars and staying there. Sunday was no different as Bernard worked a vintage signature performance to sweep both the NLSA heat race and feature before the patrons of Morden, Manitoba’s ALH Motor Speedway.
In heat race action, Roland quickly charged his #2 Lightning Sprint from his 4th place starting position past front row competitors Jesse Giesbrecht and Brent Steg to take an early lead.
A red flag was thrown half way through the heat as the #17 of Giesbrecht and #7S of Steg made contact. This resulted in Steg’s car flipping on the back stretch. Brent Steg was not injured, however, his car was damaged beyond repair, ending his night. The #7S was not the only casualty as both Jesse Geisbrecht’s #17 and the #13 of Al Giesbrecht did not finish the heat.
On the restart, Bernard distanced himself from second place Murray Temple and the rest of the field. Before the checkered flag waved for the reigning NLSA champion, attrition of the field continued as the cars of Chris Unrau and Kyle Cole pulled off with problems.
In the feature, polesitter Murray Temple raced front row challenger Roland Bernard to the first turn, but to no avail. Bernard’s #2 Lightning Sprint took the lead on the first lap and never looked back as he pulled away from Temple.
A yellow flag was thrown as Jesse Giesbrecht slowed on the backstretch with a broken chain.
The restart did not change the result as Bernard’s perfect afternoon at ALH Motor Speedway would not be denied. The 2012 NLSA Champion would go on to claim his first victory of the 2013 racing season. Rounding up the top 5 were Roland Bernard, Murray Temple, Dexter Dvergsten, Edward Bell and Chris Unrau
Next scheduled racing action for the NLSA will be at Red River Co-Op Speedway on Monday, June 10 at 7:30pm. Next scheduled racing for the NLSA at ALH Motor Speedway will be at 4:00pm on Sunday, June 16.
