OSHAWA, ON- When 2-time Canadian Tire Motorsports Park champion Willy Howells filed entry for May 3rd’s ‘Spring Derby 35’ at Sunset Speedway, the 24-year old did so with one goal in mind: sending a message.
“We’re hoping to let the rest of Ontario know that our team is for real”, explains Howells. “For us, 2014 is going to be all about being tested, and with the type of fields that Sunset Speedway attracts, we felt as though there was no better way to kick off our season”.
The Oshawa, ON driver has produced impressive numbers in his first two seasons of competition, amassing a number of feature victories en route to back-to-back division championships.
“I can’t even begin to explain how grateful I am for what our team has experienced these last two seasons”, beams Howells as his team completes final preparations for May 3rd’s invitational event. “It seems as though everything’s gone our way. Two division championships have been phenomenal, and I’m excited to step outside of our comfort zone and chase wins at a new speedway”.
The ‘Team Blue’ representative will compete full time at Kawartha Speedway this season, and hopes that a solid run in the Spring Derby will set his program in the right direction.
“It’s all about momentum”, states Howells matter-of-factly. “If we’re able to put up a big performance in our first start of the season, it’s going to make the work that we have to do to be ready for Kawartha seem a lot easier”.
Still, the talent level of the Sunset regulars is not lost on Howells, who expects to be tested every step of the way on May 3rd.
“You can’t come into an event like this with anything but your absolute best. The Sunset drivers are some of the best in Ontario, and it’s not going to be easy to get one over on them in their own backyard. We’re going to have to fight for every single position. And we’re ready for it”.
Howells and his ‘Team Blue’ stablemates will have a full week ahead of them, as they prepare for their first career appearance at Sunset Speedway. Fans can follow along with the team’s progress via Willy’s Twitter account @19WillyHowells.
