@Sunset_Speedway •BARRIE, Ont. – September 9, 2016 – Wendy Adams believes lady luck is back on her side after a challenging August and she’ll be able to make the most of the final two Mighty Mini races of the season at Sunset Speedway. It’s also a busy time for Adams, who is organizing the Defeat Depression walk in Barrie.

The walk will take place on Sunday, September 11 and begins at the Canadian Mental Health Association Building on Bradford Street in Barrie and goes to the lake front. Participants have the option of a one, five or 10-kilometre walk/run.

The goal for the walk is to raise $10,000 for the CMHA in Barrie. It follows another of Adams’ mental health fundraising initiatives. She helped host mental health night at Sunset on August 20, which helped raise $1400 for New Path Youth and Family Services.

“Everybody was pretty responsive to what we had to offer. James Thompson from New Path was there to hand out brochures and talk to people,” Adams said of the Sunset mental health night. “From the pits, we had a great response because of everything I went through. Everybody was very willing to support it.”

The Barrie, Ont. native had a new motor in place for that event and dealt with a distributor issues, but managed a pair of 15th-place finishes despite the trouble over her last two starts. The team battled the back-up engine that didn’t like the cooler temperature the car typically runs at.

“The backup motor doesn’t like it cooler. In the feature, it cooled off so the motor ran even cooler and it didn’t have any power,” Adams explained. “Last weekend, we taped up half the nose. It was running well in the heat race and I came out of corner four on lap 7 and broke the distributor.”

The team was able to fix the distributor and return to action come feature time, but had to start at the rear of the field. The car worked well though the frield and gave Adams and the team for her Pro Signs/Fastenal Midland No.78 Mustang plenty of positives to take away.

“It ran great in the feature, but I started in last place. I gained some ground and passed some cars, so I know I’m getting better,” she said. “We know we’ve got the car and have that part figured out.”

Adams and her team are still tweaking the setup on what was a brand new car to start the 2016 season. It’s common for drivers to need a year to adjust to new equipment and Adams expected that this season.

“We came in to this year with a brand new car knowing it was going to be a learning year. There’s no surprise there. We expected to be a little bit better, but you can’t predict what the car’s going to do when you’ve never built one like this before,” Adams said of here ’94 Mustang.

Adams currently sits in 12th in the Mighty Mini points and with two races left she still holds a chance of cracking the top-10.

“To me, that would end the year on a good note. With all the troubles we’ve had all summer long (3 DNFs and a blown motor), to crack the top-10 would be icing on the cake,” she explained.

The No.78 will compete in the final two weekly races at Sunset in September 10 and 17 and will join the Mini Stock field for the Velocity Shootout weekend at Sunset on September 24 and 25.

“We’ve run it every year. I’ve made the show once. It would be nice to make the final feature, but it’s still seat time, practice and fine-tuning,” Adams said. “If we make the show, we make the show. If not, we still utilized the time.”
