Elkhart Lake, Wis., (August 8, 2021) – Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Matt Campbell (Australia) won today’s running of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sportscar weekend at Road America.

MacNeil had the controls in the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Porsche 911 RSR for the start of the two-hour-and-forty-minute race. He ran fast consistent laps up to the first yellow flag and turned the Proton Competition prepared car over to Campbell in second place.

Campbell was locked in a battle with the two Corvettes for his entire stint, running just seconds behind the number four car in third. As the race progressed the Proton Competition team used a fuel saving strategy with excellent car management by Campbell to take over the lead with 30-minutes to go in the race. Without a caution the rest of the way the Australian was able to save fuel while maintaining a gap to the pursuing Corvette to take the team’s second win of the season.

“This win feels just as good as Sebring,” MacNeil said. “To win at my favorite track, in front of our home crowd and friends and family is great. We have about 300 employees here celebrating with us too, that is very cool. Winning at Road America is always special. This gives us some strong momentum going into Le Mans next week.”

“The race came down to the strategy and the fuel saving between us and the Corvettes,” Campbell said. “In the end the Proton guys made the right decision to stop when we did for fuel. At the time we thought maybe it was the wrong call. But in the end obviously it all worked out. It was a real fuel race to the end. I am happy for Cooper, David and the whole WeatherTech team on a great win today.”

The IMSA WeatherTech Championship race from Road America will be broadcast on NBCSN, tonight, August 8, starting at 8 p.m. ET.

The team will travel to Le Mans, France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans to run August 21-22. The next round for the IMSA WeatherTech Championship will be at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, September 10-12.
