GRIMSBY, ON- 2015 Sunset Speedway MIGHTY Division champion Treyten Lapcevich has confirmed he will look to qualify for this weekend’s 35-Lap Mini Stock invitational as part of Sunset’s ‘Velocity 250’ undercard.
“Races like these, where all the best teams are in the same place at the same time, are the perfect way to learn,” explains Treyten. “We’ve done a few Mini Stock races this season, and it feels like everytime we do, we come away knowing a lot more than we did before”
“When you have an invitational full of the top teams from all over, it’s a lot different than competing in a normal Saturday night event,” continues the 11-year old. “Everything about it is tougher. It’s harder to make a pass and it’s harder to hold them off when they’re trying to pass you. These teams don’t make a lot of mistakes – so we have to be sure not to make any mistakes either”
Lapcevich became the youngest champion in Sunset Speedway history when he captured his fourth feature win of the 2015 season at the speedway’s September 12th season finale.
“That was the best moment of my life,” smiles Lapcevich. “We worked hard all season just to stay competitive. The field got a lot faster as the season went on, and we just did everything that we could to stay on our game and run with the best teams on the roster. Hopefully we can use everything we learned in the MIGHTY division to our advantage this weekend”
Although the third-generation racer is set to unload at Sunset for the first time as a champion, Treyten insists the title will be nothing more than a label on race day.
“It’s an honour to be a champion, but we’re not thinking too much about that this weekend,” explains the freshman. “On Saturday morning, we’re just another driver and another number. That championship isn’t going to help us make the feature. We just have to focus all weekend, stay calm and work hard. That’s the only way we’re going to get to race on Sunday afternoon.”
