SAUBLE BEACH, ON- After chasing mechanical gremlins for much of the 2015 season thus far, former champion Todd Davenport is ready to return to the front of the field at Sauble Speedway’s ‘Battle at the Beach’ invitational.
“I feel like we’ve been on the cusp of bringing this car to life all season,” explains Davenport. “We’ve had a couple gremlins but I think we’ve taken care of them. Tonight’s going to tell the story. This is a very, very good racecar. And once we get these issues sorted – these teams are going to have to look out”
The fan-favourite notes that his family-run team have continued to experiment with a number of new setup techniques, in order to stay on the cutting edge of the rapidly changing Thunder Car division.
“As a driver, it’s your job to keep trying things,” says Davenport matter-of-factly. “It’s all trial and error. That’s the only way you’re ever going to advance and get faster. The complacent guys are the ones that go a lap down first”
“Right now, we’re just working through what works and what doesn’t,” continues the blue collar veteran. “It’s just a little more difficult to do when you’re not running a full schedule”
Tonight, Davenport will have to contend with fellow Sauble standouts Joe Adams, Ron Lawrence and Ken Grubb in addition to cross-province visitors like Matt Bentley and Cayden Lapcevich.
“We were really close the last time we had this car on track. With all of the work we’ve done in the last couple weeks, I’m confident that we can put this car in a good spot when the laps start to matter”
“This is a race worth winning,” smiles Davenport. “When you have this level of talent in the same place, at the same time, you don’t wanna be the first guy off the track at the end of the feature. We want to get to victory lane more than anyone else out here”
“It’s just all about putting the moving parts together.”
