INNISFIL, ON- After blowing a power steering line during the evening’s ‘Fan Appreciation Autograph Session’, Thayne Hallyburton rebounded in impressive fashion. The Sunset freshman started at the tail end of the 50-lap ‘Super Series’ event, before working his way through to his second straight top-10 finish.
“That was a brutal way to start our night”, joked Hallyburton post-race. “I thought we hit a dog on the way to the speedway for karma purposes”
“We caught the power steering problem during the autograph session”, continued Hallyburton. “There was oil spraying out of my lines all over the speedway. So, we came back to the pits and fashioned together a new line just to make the feature”
Hallyburton’s dedication was quickly rewarded, as he capitalized on a number of early-race cautions to skillfully maneuver his way through traffic.
“There were some hairy moments and torn up racecars early on”, said Hallyburton. “Our car was good. It was much better through the ends tonight. It’s still a work in progress, but we’re definitely improving”
When asked about his car’s tire wear throughout the evening, Hallyburton was sure not to mince words.
“They’re done. Our right front is just destroyed. When you have to come from deep in the field like that, you have to turn under guys every lap to make something work, and it just chews up your right front”
“What’s most important is that we made it through clean”, continued Hallyburton. “And when you don’t have to worry about damage repair through the week, you can actually work to make your car quicker”
‘The Hillsdale Hurricane’ is quick to point out his team is still working fervently to find the right set-up package for Sunset, but is still happy with their gains.
“We just have to keep tweaking. We’re closing in on it”, explained Hallyburton. “The car’s coming off square, but it’s spinning the tires. We’re having a hard time finding bite, so we’ll keep adjusting our shocks and trailing arms until we find something”
“Now that our car is beginning to handle better, we can concentrate on driving this speedway the way it needs to be driven. You have to have a car under you that you trust, because you have to sling it into the corner and get up on that wheel”
Thayne Hallyburton’s efforts would not be possible without support from Hillsdale Service Centre and Thompson Enterprises. Additional packages are still available.
‘The Hillsdale Hurricane’ will return to action this Saturday, May 31st at Sunset Speedway for the third 50-lap Limited Late Model ‘Super Series’ race of the 2014 season.
