Delaware, ON (August 16, 2013)- The much anticipated ISMA Super Modifieds event roared onto the famed racetrack of Delaware Speedway on Friday night for a 75-lap special event. The ISMA machines are the most powerful cars to race on half-mile oval track each season.
Ben Seitz (#17) of Bourne, MA proved to be the fastest, taking the win. The OSCAAR modifieds also took the track by storm with qualifying heat races for Saturday’s OSCAAR 50-lap feature. The Coca-Cola Super Stocks raced a 35-lap feature with Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin coming out on top.
Ben Seitz (#17) of Bourne, MA won the ISMAs Super Modified 75-lap feature, after moving his way up from sixth place. “Liquid” Lou Cicconi of Aston, PA finished second and Mo Lilje of Vickery, OH finished third. The race had two cautions, one of which was an extended red flag as the safety crew were called to the assistance of a spectator in an incident unrelated to the competition. Seitz’s win is his second Canadian victory this year and his first-ever win at Delaware. The Super Modifieds will be racing at Sunset Speedway near Barrie on Sunday.
The OSCAAR Modifieds will race a 50-lap feature on Saturday, but ran their time trials and heat races on Friday. Justin DeMelo (#82) of London ran the fastest time trial with a time of 18.513 seconds. The time sets a new Delaware Speedway Open-Wheel Modified track record.
Justin Demelo (#82) dominated the first OSCAAR Modifieds heat with the speed he showed in the time trials. Barry Newman (#1) finished second, and Brent McLean (#7) finished third. Gary McLean (#8) also took advantage of the speed he demonstrated in the time trials and finished first in the second OSCAAR Modifieds heat, with David McCullough (#39M) finishing in second and Brian McLean (#47) finishing third. The time trials along with the heat races will be a determining factor in the starting position for the OSCAAR modifieds for Saturday’s feature race.
Defending champion Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin was a man on a mission on the track Friday night, finishing first in the Coca-Cola Super Stocks feature as well as his heat race. Jordan Lawrence (#78) of London led the first two laps of the Super Stocks feature but was passed by Darrell Lake (#77) of London on lap three. Lake could not compete with Showler’s speed and was passed in lap seven. Showler refused to let go of his position until he crossed the finish line. Trouble found top points contender Kenny McNicol Jr. (#17) of Exeter Shae Gemmell (#3) of Dorchester who led the points entering the evening when the pair tangled together on lap 13. Gemmell was not able to resume the event, McNicol finished ninth. With the trouble for the points leaders combined with his strong performance Jeff Showler now leads the Coca-Cola Super Stock points standings.
Racing continues Saturday with the OSCAAR 50-lap feature and the GAW Recycling Enduro 100. The Safety Crew and Whitworth Towing will also be having a competition to see if either can successfully roll some junkyard cars. For full event details and ticket sales visit www.delawarespeedway.com
