Spencer Lewis takes a look back at the racing action from Ontario Short Tracks for the weekend of June 8-9, 2013.
June 8:
Delaware Speedway-
Late Model title contender Jay Doerr ended Jamie Cox’s 2-race winning streak, solidifying his first feature win of the season. Cox, the current Late Model point leader, would settle for 2nd after pressuring Doerr through much of the race’s later stages. Adam Quarrie would complete the podium, while Modified graduates Shawn Thompson and Stephen Richmond rounded out the top-5.
Brady Smith & Gary Adriaensen would win the evening’s 2 Truck division features.
In the first Open-Ontario Four Cylinder Championship event of the season, defending race winner Cory Young returned to Delaare victory lane, with divisional heavyweight Dave Bailey and 2012 Flamboro Mini Stock champion Billy Schwartzenburg completing the top-3.
June 9th
Barrie Speedway:
Shawn Murray and Gord ‘The Smoke’ Shepherd won Barrie Speedway’s twin-Limited Late Model features on June 9th. The first race saw sophomore standout Murray capture his second victory of the season, holding off 2010 division champion Al Inglis, while Shepherd, Rookie of the Year contender Leonard Johnston and 2011 champion Ron Quesnelle rounded out the top-5.
Race 2 would see ‘The Smoke’ earn his 4th feature win of the season, further cementing himself atop the division’s weekly point standings. Al Inglis would log his second runner-up finish of the night, followed by Leonard Johnston, sophomore Andre Pepin and Ron Quesnelle.
The evening’s Thunder Car feature would belong to former track champion Dave Doucette, who narrowly held off point leader Darryl St. Onge at the stripe. Defending champion Rick Walt, Rookie of the Year contender ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Sikes and Jim Belesky completed the top-5.
Defending champion Charlie Smith captured the evening’s Mini Stock feature.
Canadian Tire Motorsports Park:
Defending CTMP Ltd. Late Model champion Kyle Donaldson ended his 2013 winless streak in Week 3 of the CTMP season, holding off Kawartha Speedway veteran Linc Brown and multi-time CTMP titlist Dwight Brown for the win. Week 2 winner Darren Kearnan and Scott Harrison completed the top-5.
Henk Mulders won the evening’s Pure Stock feature.
Flamboro Speedway:
Pro Late Model veteran Steve Laking won Round 1 of the Grisdale Triple Crown on Saturday night. The Guelph, ON driver would lead all 75-laps in a dominating performance, holding former Triple Crown champion Shawn Chenoweth at bay after a hotly contested late-race restart. Defending Triple Crown champion Jason Shaw, Brad Corcoran and Scott Lyons would complete the top-5.
Thunder Car veteran Gary Slama would claim his first feature win of 2013, leading Kevin Gallant, Chris Howse, Mark Burbridge and defending champion Kevin Albers across the line.
Multi-time champion Dave Bailey would win the Mini Stock feature, while Aaron Turkey claimed the Pro-4 Modified A-Main.
Peterborough Speedway:
Multi-time track champion Craig Graham would once again prove to be the class of the Peterborough Ltd. Late Model field, tallying his 2nd victory in as many starts on June 9th. The Orono, ON veteran came out on the right side of a photo finish with defending champion Bryan Sudsbury, while former Autumn Colours Classic champion ‘Handsome’ Chris Mitchell, Steve Foster and 2011 Kawartha Summer Sizzler winner ‘The Silverback’ Bryan Mercer completed the fast five.
In support division action, the Farm Bros. Racing Team would send a pair of drivers to victory lane, as Ryan Oosterholt won the Four Fun feature and Chris Mulders claimed top honors in the Mini Stock division. Bill O’Harra won the Renegade Truck event.
Sunset Speedway:
Jason ‘Bam Bam’ Witty became the 5th different winner in as many weeks in the Sunset Ltd. Late Model division on June 9th. The Queensville, ON product turned away a number of late-race charges from runner-up Billy ‘Z3’ Zardo to hang on for the win. ‘Hollywood’ Taylor Holdaway would log his second top-3 in as many starts while 7-time track champion Chris Morrow and 2012 Autumn Colours Classic winner Dwayne Baker completed the top-5.
In Super Stock competition, Lane Zardo ended point leader Randy ‘The Rocket’ Rusnell’s win streak, ensuring the defending champion would be denied of a 5th straight trip to victory lane. Rusnell would settle for 2nd, followed by sophomore sensation Cayden Lapcevich, former Flamboro regular Dennis Cybalski and promising upstart Paul Geniole Jr.
‘The Astronaut’ Brandon McFerran led 22 of 25 laps for his first Mini Stock feature win of the 2013 season.
Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup:
Defending tour champion Shawn McGlynn won Round 2 of the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series at Sauble. The veteran bested an impressive field of 18 starters, and was followed to the stripe by former Open Wheel Modified standout Dan Prudhomme, Josh Wood, Amanda Connolly and ‘Hollywood’ Darrell Lake.
Ontario Legends Series:
Nick Ledson earned his second Ontario Legends Series victory of the season at Peterborough Speedway on June 9th.
Canadian Vintage Modifieds:
Corey Jones earned the win in Round 2 of the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modified season at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on June 8th. Jason Keen, Adrian Donkers, Brian Atkinson and Daryl Henwood followed Jones to the line.
