INNISFIL, ON- Corey Jones opened up the 2015 OSCAAR Super Late Model season in impressive fashion, earning a 4th place finish in Round 1 of the tour at Sunset Speedway on May 17th.
The Shakespeare, ON driver dodged a number of early-race incidents, running within the top-3 for much of the event’s 53-lap distance.
“A performance like this makes the long nights in the shop seem worth it,” beamed Jones post-race. “We’ve struggled so much at Sunset in the past; to come out of the gate with a top-5 finish like this is huge. This almost feels like a win for us”
The former Canadian Vintage Modified standout was forthcoming in the weeks leading up to the season opener about his team’s work over the off-season. When asked if the car felt any different on track, the answer was a resounding ‘yes’.
“This felt like a completely different car today,” explained Jones. “We spent the off-season changing virtually everything in the front end – and I could feel every single one of those changes this weekend”
“The entire attitude of the car felt better. This is the best this car has ever handled at Sunset. After today – I can’t wait to get this thing back on track, because I feel like there’s still a lot more that we can get out of it”
“We get to go to Flamboro next, I’m really looking forward to that,” continued Jones. “Flamboro’s where I grew up. I know that track better than any other facility we go to on this tour, so I’m really excited to see what kind of performance we can put together there”
“I’m a little disappointed with myself, because I felt like we had a top-3 car today,” admitted Jones. “The car just tightened up on us late in the race and I couldn’t get the drive off that I needed. We’ll go home and check over our notes and make this ride even better for Round 2”
When asked his plans for the 2015 season, Jones makes it clear his family-run effort is ready to contend with the very best.
“I believe that we have a program strong enough to race for a championship this season. We just need more nights like tonight. Consistency is what wins championships. If we can get our momentum rolling early and just keep one foot in front of the other, I think we stand as good a chance as anybody else in this pit area.”
Corey Jones’ will be back in action in Round 2 of the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour at Flamboro Speedway on May 30th.
Jones’ 2015 season would not be possible without the support of Griffen + Highbury, Nelson Aggregate, LaFleche Roofing, Royal Bank of Canada, Accountable Automotive, Castle Building Centres, Anmar Cleaning, Oktane Productions and EPIC Racewear.
