(February 6, 2014) GRAND PRAIRIE, ALBERTA – It was a busy weekend for Benjamin Silliker and his Team Silco Racing operation. They traveled to Salem, Oregon to compete in a weekend event with both the Black Dog Drilling Waterwell & Environmental Services 600cc Micro Sprint and a borrowed Box Cage Kart belonging to the Thornhill family, who are fellow competitors and friends.
Salem Speedway in Salem, Oregon is a track that Ben had never seen before, let alone raced on. The goal for the weekend was to gain some valuable experience in hopes of encouraging other tracks to allow him to race, as many States have an age rule for the 600cc Micro Sprint division. Due to car counts in his division, Ben would have to compete in the open class, and he still managed to score a top five finish in his A-main and remained on the lead lap throughout the event. On Sunday, he improved to finish fourth in the A-main, and although he was lapped by the leaders near the end of the race, he was experienced enough to know to move up the track and not interfere with the lead cars.
The Cage Kart program was even better, as Ben won his opening heat race at Salem on Saturday, and finished second in the second round of heats. Ben finished the A-main with a third place finish as the team was hindered by a carburetor issue. Sunday was a much better outcome as Ben swept the entire day, winning both heat races as well as the A-Main. The win was in the open box division, which is typically for teenagers and young adults. This would be Ben’s last event as an eight year old, as he celebrated his birthday on Monday.
Team Silco is still working at finalizing a full schedule for 2014, as much of it hinges on permission from other tracks to allow Ben to race under the regulated age. At nine years of age, he is a year too young to race at many tracks, and several years to young at other venues.
Coming up though, Ben will race the cage kart on February 14-16 at Lakeport, California. On March 1, and March 7-8, Ben will return to compete with the Red Bluff Outlaw Series and the West Coast Nationals in the cage kart. On March 28-30, the team will return to Salem, Oregon for the Cage Cup, where they will be competing the cage kart once again, as well as the 600cc Black Dog Drilling Waterwell & Environmental Services Micro Sprint.
