PLATTSVILLE, ON- With two consecutive victories with the APC United Late Model Series in his hip pocket, current point leader Shawn Chenoweth will unload at Sauble Speedway on August 2nd for Round 6 of the Pro Late Model tour with momentum on his side and a championship within his reach.
‘The Mastodon’ has won the “Beat the Heat” during its time as an unsanctioned event, and on Sunday night will hope that it provides the backdrop for his third straight tour win.
“I’m not sure anybody thought it was possible to win two races on this tour – consecutive or not,” says Chenoweth in reference to his recent triumphs at Flamboro and Peterborough.
“But, right now, this program is working as well as any car I’ve ever owned. We’re in a rhythm. And, once you get going, it’s tough to break that. We’re able to unload on race day and get that feel for what the car wants to do. From there, it’s just all about making good decisions and finding a little bit of luck”
In the team’s most recent performance at Peterborough on July 18th, Chenoweth turned in a performance that was nothing short of dominant, leading all 100-laps en route to claiming Round 5 of the cross-province tour.
“If we can get this car working as well as it was at Peterborough, I think we stand an excellent chance at making it to victory lane,” smiles Chenoweth when asked about his chances for a repeat performance at Sauble on Sunday. “We just need for the car to be free enough to roll the center. That’s where ground is made and lost at Sauble. So long as we can get it turning, and be easy on our right rear, we’ll be in good shape”
Chenoweth goes on to maintain that, despite some popular belief, both grooves can be utilized to make passes at Sauble – which is precisely what he aims to do during his proposed march to the front of the field.
“I think some guys write Sauble off as a one-groove racetrack, and they’re all wrong,” notes the veteran. “You can pass on the top at Sauble. We had to come from the back to win this race in 2010, and we were pretty much forced to the outside to make a lot of passes. So, I know it can be done”
“If we can get our car rolling around the top side on Sunday, it will make all the difference”
With his Round 5 dominance fresh in his mind, it’s clear Chenoweth is eager for a strong follow-up with only three races remaining on the 2015 schedule.
“Peterborough was just about as perfect of a race as we could ever ask for,” explains the London Recreational Racing representative. “That’s exactly the level of effort we’re looking to put in at Sauble. In my mind this team is, without question, good enough to win on Sunday”
“With a little bit of luck, this team is good enough to win the next three races,” adds Chenoweth with a grin. “Now, it’s just my job to make it happen.”
