PLATTSVILLE, ON- With the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour set to invade Peterborough Speedway on September 5th, ‘The Mastodon’ Shawn Chenoweth hopes to break through for his first career tour victory. The Late Model veteran has scored big wins at Peterborough in the past, and has his sights set on adding a Super Late Model triumph to his constantly growing resume.
Chenoweth returned from a month-long hiatus last Saturday at Flamboro Speedway, registering a third place finish on home turf. In the days following his performance, Chenoweth explained that while he was proud of his team’s effort, he still feels as though his London Recreational Racing-sponsored No. 89C has more to give.
“I think when you’re competing at this level there’s a big difference between being proud of your team’s performance and being satisfied with your results,” explains Chenoweth. “After destroying this car in July, I was proud just to be back with the tour at Flamboro – but I wasn’t satisfied with third. This car didn’t respond the way we wanted it to, and as soon as we got it back in the shop on Sunday morning we were working to make it better for Peterborough”
The former Pro Late Model champion consulted with McColl Racing Enterprises’ Mike McColl this week, and is confident his team has formulated a package capable of running at the front this Saturday.
“We’ve spoken with Mike McColl a few times this week, and we just missed the setup at Flamboro,” shrugs the fan favourite. “That won’t be the case this weekend. Peterborough has been one of our strongest tracks in the past and I’m really looking forward to getting back there. I know that JR [Fitzpatrick] was in a league of his own the last time the tour was there, so we’re going to have to keep working if we want to keep up”
With Peterborough’s famed Autumn Colours Classic just over a month away, Chenoweth readily admits that his team will be busy gathering as many notes as possible throughout the day on Saturday, as they prepare for what they hope will be a hallmark performance in the Thanksgiving Weekend spectacular.
“Every race is just a test session for the next one,” says Chenoweth flatly. “But, this Saturday especially, we’re doing our homework for the [Autumn Colours] Classic. We’ve won the event in our Pro Late Model in 2010, and I’d love to add a Super Late Model win there to our resume. It’s a huge weekend. And no matter what division you’re racing in – a win there just means more than anywhere else.”
