PLATTSVILLE, ON- ‘The Mastodon’ Shawn Chenoweth will return to OSCAAR Super Late Model competition this weekend, as his London Recreational Racing effort sets its sights on Sunset Speedway’s Velocity 250 to contend for their first career tour win.
Chenoweth has battled through a number of mechanical issues over the course of his 2015 Super Late Model campaign, but has still managed a podium and three top-10s in his four starts this year.
“We haven’t had any luck at all with this car this year, so hopefully we can change that this weekend,” explains Chenoweth. “We’ve double and triple checked everything for the Velocity, so at this stage all we can do is go about our business and hope this thing stays together. If it stays running, we’ve got as good of a piece as anybody else out here – and I intend to prove that this weekend”
‘The Mastodon’ has tallied a number of top-5 finishes in previous Sunset starts – including the opening round of the APC United Late Model Series in late May – but hopes to break his team’s Sunset winless streak on Sunday.
“I’ve had good runs at Sunset in the past in a couple of different cars, but I’ve never won there,” says the second-generation racer. “It’s always a good feeling to scratch a new track off that imaginary list that we’re all walking around with in our heads, so that’ll be the goal. We had a top-5 at this event last season, but I’d be lying to you if I said that we were satisfied with it. We’re here to win races. That’s what the hours are for. And I feel like we’re getting a lot closer to that every time we run this car”
Having recently earned runner-up honours in the race for the 2015 APC Series season, Chenoweth admits he’s looking forward to returning to OSCAAR competition without any distractions.
“You won’t hear me complaining that our points racing is done for the year,” smiles the veteran. “This weekend, I have one thing to concentrate on and that’s driving this thing to the front. We’ve still got a lot of unfinished business with this tour. It still doesn’t feel like we’ve been able to turn in a performance that’s strong enough by our standards”
“Right now, our Pro Late Model program is one of the best in the province,” continues Chenoweth, in reference to his two APC Series wins this season. “And it’s going to be that level of work ethic that we put into our Super Late [Model] in the last two races of the year. It’s just as hard to steal a win away from the OSCAAR regulars than it is to get an APC [Series] win. We know that we have a team smart enough and capable enough to be in the conversation on Sunday. Now, it’s about putting it all together.”
