PORT COLBORNE, ON – As Humberstone Speedway waved the green on its 66th season of operation, the crowd full of families celebrating Father’s Day were treated to a night of clean racing. Justin Sharp of St. Catharines, ON scored the win in the Sterling Lubricant’s Sportsman, while Pete Reid of Stevensville, ON visited Quick Wick Fire Starter Victory Lane in the GR Enviro Rail Street Stocks. Welland, ON native Leroy Buscumb scored his first-ever win in the Tender Cuts Meats Modified Lites. Port Colborne’s Dave Small won the NRVRS Vintage Class feature and Alex Riley of St. Catharines got the win in the Bosch Car Services Mini Stock event.

Justin Sharp and Jay Mallory led the field to green in the Sterling Lubricant Sportsman, as they headlined the 66th season opener at Humberstone Speedway. Sharp used the bottom to jump out to the lead from Mallory. Mallory never fell more than a half-second behind, as the race ran green the entire stretch. Cody McPherson, who started ninth, drove up to Mallory’s bumper, making the pass for second with three laps to go. However, he could not get to Sharp, who negotiated lap traffic perfectly to score the win and hold off McPherson. Mallory ended up third, with Brad Rouse fourth and Chad Chevalier fifth.

The GR Enviro & Rail Thunder Stocks began with Ryan Beagle on the pole. Beagle led early, before Pete Reid was able to take the lead from third starting spot. While Reid amassed a significant advantage, the battle for second raged with a rotating cast of characters, including Beagle, Ryan Dinning, Zach Bleich and Jason Fontaine. The battle came to a halt when the caution flew for Bleich, as he slowed with a flat tire on lap 13. On the restart, Kyle Pelrine moved forward to second and got to Reid’s back bumper in the final set of corners but raced him cleanly and could not get by. Reid took the win over Pelrine, Fontaine, Beagle and Jim Lampman.

Dave Cornish and Leroy Buscumb started from the front of the Tender Cuts Meats Modified Lites field. Buscumb jumped out to the early advantage, in search of his first win in a Mod Lite. A spin from Brent Begolo, with two laps to go, brought the field back to Buscumb. But the night belonged to Buscumb, as he drove off to score his first career win in the class. Shawn Sliter was second, Tyler Winger finished third, Ryan Anderson fourth and Sean Iftody fifth.

Humberstone Speedway was visited by the NRVRS Vintage Cars on Sunday night. Dave Small was able to sweep the night, starting out with a victory in his heat. Small followed that up by winning the feature in dominating fashion. The only caution of the night came on lap 11, when Jens Mortensen and Tim Harris tangled. Doug Gordon started last and drove all the way to second but ran out of time to mount a charge for the win. Mark Shadwell was third, while Bill Montreuil and Harris rounded out the top-five with a great recovery drive.

The first feature of the night was the Bosch Car Services Mini Stocks, where Cole Hardy and Shawn Keus started on the front row. However, Hardy suffered on the first lap, bringing out an early yellow. Keus, however, would battle with Alex Riley for several laps for the lead on the restart, with Riley advancing to the point. Caution came again as Keus and fellow frontrunner Randy Alway tangled with the lap vehicle of Josh Silvio, ending his night, while Keus continued with minimal damage and Alway dropped to the tail of the field for the restart. Riley led the final four laps and won the feature over Keus, Tyler Lafantaise, John Lubeck and Olivier Larocque.
