ACTON, ON- After back to back top-5 finishes to open the 2014 Sunset Speedway season, 15-year old Brandon McFerran broke through for a spirited runner-up result in Week 3 of competition on May 17th.
“This takes a huge weight off of our shoulders”, said McFerran in post-race technical inspection. “We’re still hungry for a win, but for the last two weeks it felt as though we were going to be stuck in 4th place forever”
The third-generation star rolled off mid-pack, working his way through traffic in the flag-to-flag affair.
“I think the Mini Stocks stole the show tonight”, grinned the Acton High School student. “That race had a great pace to it. No yellows, all racing. It didn’t make it easy to work through traffic, but I’m positive the fans got their money’s worth tonight”
‘The Astronaut’ spent the entirety of the 25-lap race tailing eventual winner Myles Tyson, working to within a car length of the fellow teenager, but running out of time to make a pass.
“I haven’t had a chance to see what Dad had on the stopwatch for lap times yet”, said McFerran, “but I’m sure Myles and I were rattling off almost identical times”
“Myles never really left my front bumper”, continued McFerran, showing poise beyond his years. “I could see him. I could hear him. But I just couldn’t close enough to make a run for the lead”
Content with the runner-up finish, ‘The Astronaut’ is quick to stress his goals for the 2014 season.
“This year was never going to be about padding our trophy case”, re-affirmed the youngster. “We’re looking for consistent finishes every weekend. I want that championship more than anything, and solid finishes like this is how we’re going to earn it”
“I’ve been complaining about the handling of this car for two weeks. I’m sure my dad is sick of listening to me”, added McFerran with a smile. “Tonight, the guy’s hit the setup dead on. This car was awesome, we just couldn’t catch Myles”
