PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… Third generation driver Erick Rudolph from Ransomville, NY was victorious in the 30 lap feature for the DIRTcar Modifieds and unofficially clinched his first Humberstone DIRTcar Modified Championship on CAA Niagara Night at the New Humberstone Speedway.
14 year-old Travis Miller from St. Catharines, Ontario clamed his second Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman feature of the season. “The Fonz” Jason Fontaine from Port Colborne, Ontario crossed the finish line first for his fourth J.C. Auto Street Stocks feature of the 2013 campaign however, Fontaine failed post race inspection. Adam Nicholls from Port Colborne, Ontario claimed his first Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks feature of the season, becoming the eighth different winner in the class in 2013. Rocco Conte from Welland, Ontario picked up his first Trackside Decal Mini Stocks feature of the year. Olivier Larocque from Port Colborne, Ontario picked up his third straight and fourth Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stock feature of the season. John Burt was the winner of the Eve of Destruction Enduro qualifier.
Erick Rudolph and Todd Gordon led the DIRTcar Modifieds for their 30 lap Championship finale with Rudolph getting the advantage over Gordon, Tommy Flannigan, Chris Steele and Mat Williamson early on. With Rudolph jumping out to the lead, Williamson, the 2013 Lernerville Speedway Champion, passed Steele for fourth on lap eight. “The Natural” Dale Planck challenged Mike Bowman and Chris Steele for fifth at the races one-third mark. Planck would pass Bowman for fifth just as Rudolph was shown the cross flags from Starter John Veach.
Rudolph was in command of the feature as Williamson caught Flannigan for second place. Planck passed Todd Gordon for fourth on lap 20 and set his sights on Tommy Flannigan and Mat Williamson. Erick Rudolph would roll on to his fourth win of the season and his first Humberstone track title. Flannigan would finish in second and was followed by Williamson, Planck and Todd Gordon.
“We tried something new tonight and it ended up working” stated Rudolph in Victory Lane. “I would like to congratulate Dale Planck on a great season as well” Rudolph continued.
Dale Planck was the highest Big Block in the points and will receive the Big Block bonus points bonus from DIRTcar.
“The bonus points for the Big Blocks will definitely help us towards our goal of winning Mr. DIRT” stated Planck, who finish fourth in the season finale.
Travis Miller and Chad Brown led the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman to the green flag for their 25 lap feature event and it was Miller showing the way with Brian Schmidt, Jordan Cosco, Jeff Armstrong and Robert Baker racing in the top five early on. Cosco would go underneath Schmidt for second just as Tony Cowell and Joey Mastrioanni came together in turn one.
On the early restart, Miller would pull away from Cosco just as Adam Leslie entered the top five. Cody McPherson passed Schmidt for sixth place on lap eight. Leslie got loose off turn four and lost several positions on the speedway. Miller would continue to be the leader at the halfway point with Cosco, Armstrong, Baker and McPherson in the top five.
On a lap 16 restart, Miller would continue to show the way just as Michael Bosse and couple other competitors came together in turn one. A multicar pileup occurred coming off turn four as Robert Baker spun and Brian Schmidt did a roll over down the front stretch. All drivers were alert and talking to speedway and medical personnel. A total of seven cars were involved in the lap 17 incident.
On the restart, Miller showed the way over Cosco as Cody McPherson moved into third place and Darrell Farraway moved into fourth. Armstrong and McPherson made contact and Farraway moved into third with BJ Willard entering the top five. McPherson and Willard then went three wide with Farraway to take third and fourth respectively late in the event. Miller would hold off Cosco, McPherson, Willard and Farraway to claim his second checkered flag of the season.
“The car was good tonight” stated Miller, 14 in Victory Lane.
Paul Reichel and James Thompson were on the front row for the JC Auto Street Stocks and it was Thompson showing the way. Rick Champigny and Roy Crawford came together in turn two to slow the field down for the first time. On the restart, Thompson and Reichel raced hard as Lee Winger closed in on the lead duo to make it a trio for the lead on lap four. Thompson, Reichel and Winger continued their battle for lead just as Jason Fontaine and both Turner brothers reeled in the leaders.
Jason Fontaine and James Thompson would battle for the lead and at the halfway point; Fontaine gained the lead with Ryan Turner in second and Lee Winger in third. Winger and Ryan Turner would battle for second and Winger made contact and Turner went spinning in turn two to slow the field down on lap 14.
The six lap shootout would see Fontaine continue to show the way but Paul Reichel worked his way back into second and would challenge on the bottom of the speedway and take the lead on lap 16 but Fontaine would quickly retake the lead just one lap later. Fontaine would go on to what appeared to be his fourth win of the season but Fontaine refused tech.
Adam Nicholls and Andy Imbeault led the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag and it was the double-nickel machine of Nicholls showing the way early on. Sam Pennacchio went three-wide with Danny Wurster and Imbeault to move into second on lap six. Colton Ledingham and Imbeault battled for fourth place for several laps with Ledingham moving into fourth with five circuits remaining. Adam Nicholls was able to drive away from the field to pick up his first win of the season.
Greg and Garnet Wilson led the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks to the green flag for their 15 lap feature go and it was father Garnet leading the way over his son Greg. “The Big Guy” Dave Small got around Greg Wilson for the runner up spot just as Evan Curtis, Kyle Pelrine, Kyle Rothwell were racing in the top five. Curtis would go underneath Small for second as Pelrine went to the outside of Curtis for third. Kameron Kocarik spun in turn two on lap nine to bring out the races first caution. On the restart it was Garnet Wilson keeping his advantage. Pelrine was able to take second away just as Tyler Lafantaisie hit the front stretch wall and lost a wheel. On the lap 11 restart, Rocco Conte entered the top three and went to the outside of Pelrine for second and then went downstairs on Wilson to take over the lead. Conte would hold off Pelrine and Garnet Wilson to claim his first win of the season.
Dave Larocque and Brad Alward led the Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks to the green flag for their feature event and it was third place starter Brad Booker getting the lead into turns one and two. Booker would lead Alward and Olivier Larocque at the end of lap one and Olivier Larocque moved into second on lap two. Alward would then go underneath Booker for the race lead on lap five. Olivier Larocque would continue his way to the front as he passed Booker for second and then would go downstairs for the race lead on lap eight. Larocque would roll on to his third straight victory in the Pure Stocks.
HUMBERSTONE NOTES: The New Humberstone Speedway would like to welcome Rachel Brown as the new Miss Humberstone. Car count report for Sunday August 25th: 16 Modifieds, 25 Sportsman, 11 Street Stocks, 14 Mini Stocks, 12 Pro 4 Trucks and 7 Pure Stocks for a total of 85 cars pitside. The final checkered flag flew over the Enduro field at 10:00pm.
Racing returns to the Port Colborne oval on Labor Day Sunday September 1st as it will be the final points show of the season for the Sportsman and Late Models. The Street Stocks, Pro 4 Trucks, Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will round out the six-divisional show. Gates will open at 4:00pm for both the pits and the grandstands and racing will begin at 6:00pm sharp.
