St. Eustache, Que. July 27, 2013. Martin Roy earned his best-ever series qualifying time prior to a top 10 finish at the Autodrome St. Eustache in Saturday’s National 250.
The team had a solid practice session, only making adjustments to improve corner handling on the #90 Batteries Expert/Veloce/Gamache Dodge. The changes were successful and Roy qualified 3rd for the race.
When the main event kicked off, Roy ran comfortably with leaders in the early going, choosing to stay out during the first caution. The #90 was able to secure the lead position despite his car running hot. Roy hoped getting out front would cool the vehicle down, and it did. He was able to navigate his Dodge comfortably out front without serious challenge.
As Roy worked his way through traffic there was contact with another car, bowing his hood and impeding his ability to see the track. NASCAR issued a black flag to fix the problem and his team assessed the damage. They opted to remove the hood entirely instead of taping it down, and the time-consuming decision cost the team several laps.
“It was a bad call on my part to rip the hood off,” said Crew Chief Mario Gosselin.
The #90 brushed off the lost laps and continued to battle to the end, his race car remained one of the fastest in the field.
The team’s relentlessness paid off and Roy secured a 7th place finish.
“The car ran beautifully the whole race, and Mario and the team did a very good job,” Roy said after the race. “We kept fighting right to the end and earned a solid finish and decent points result.”
After yesterday’s race, Martin Roy is ranked sixth in the overall standings.
