STROUD, ON (August 24, 2017)- Despite qualifying deep in the field, Rick Spencer-Walt was able to make his way to the front to score a top-10 in the APC Auto Parts United Late Models of Ontario Tour event at Sunset Speedway on Saturday night.
As noted, he would qualify deep in the field – starting the event in 18th after the car bottomed out in the time trial session. He began to make his way forward, moving up to the 13th position by Lap 34. He would avoid an incident ahead of him a couple laps later, restarting 11th with 66 laps to go. From there, he would battle side-by-side with Shawn McGlynn for 10th, getting the position on Lap 40. He would then look to challenge Mark Burbridge for ninth, but contact happened going into turn one, resulting in Burbridge going around and right front damage for Spencer-Walt. Spencer-Walt made his way down pit road under caution, with repairs being made to the fender, along with adjustments made to improve the handling.
Restarting 18th with 57 laps to go, he began to make his forward, battling Jamie Cox for 13th on Lap 63. He’d get the spot, before continuing to move up, running 11th with three-quarters of the event complete. He was then able to make another pair of passes, breaking into the top-10 and running ninth with 23 laps to go. He would get alongside Billy Schwartzenburg for ninth with 20 laps to go, getting the spot on Lap 83, followed by passing Treyten Lapcevich for eighth a lap later. He then got alongside Andy Kamrath for seventh on Lap 85. The climb continued as he snagged the seventh position on Lap 87 ahead of Kamrath, He would get alongside Shae Gremmel for sixth with four laps to go, but the caution flew on the last lap before he completed the pass for a spin.
Restarting seventh, he was unable to hold off Schwartzenburg for the position, ultimately crossing the finish line in the eighth-position.
Looking at the year as a whole with a couple months to go, there is no complaining about the results with 11 podium finishes in 22 features this season. Notably, the team has posted six straight top-four finishes at Sunset Speedway heading into this weekend’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Model event.
