ST. JOHN’S, NL – The 22nd running of Targa Newfoundland, the legendary tarmac rally, just came to an exciting finish in the historic town of Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador last week and we’re now accepting registrations for 2025 with a discount of 20 per cent if you register before Oct. 1, 2024.
Targa Newfoundland is one of only three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. Since 2002, Targa Newfoundland, the ultimate tarmac rally in North America, has attracted professional and amateur racers from across the globe to the ruggedly beautiful island of Newfoundland on Canada’s east coast. The 2025 event runs Sept. 11-18, 2025. Competitors will cover over 2000 km (about 1240 miles) across the island of Newfoundland including hundreds of kilometres of closed stages on public roads. They include scenic and challenging coastal highways and narrow, winding streets through towns and villages.
You don’t need a race car (though there are classes for rally prepped cars as well as stock ones). You don’t need to be a race car driver (though we welcome them – looking at you, Randy Pobst, et al). You do need a sense of adventure and a need for speed!
Competitors raced everything from stock hot hatches to fully caged, rally prepped cars this year. There are four different divisions – Fast Tour (non-competitive), Grand Tour (time, speed, distance), Targa 1 (no cage) and Targa 2 (caged). A vintage Porsche 911 won Targa 1 and a rally-prepped MINI Cooper S claimed Targa 2. Teams from across Canada and the United States took part and became fast friends. Their only disappointment? That it was over too soon.
Where else can you race at speed through the closed streets of towns like Bay Bulls and Gander with spectators cheering and waving? Where else can you blast along rollercoaster roads through eye-popping, spectacular scenery like the ones near St. Brides, Salvage and Random Island, among other thrilling stages?
