The entire racing community is saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Bill Zardo Sr. yesterday.
According to his daughter, Sharon Shepherd, he was heading out to the garage to work on his racecar, when his heart gave out.
A legendary and successful racer, Bill Zardo Sr. was one of the patriarchs of the Zardo / Shepherd racing families.
Inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame just a few months ago, ‘The Big Z’ was back on the track in 2022 – at the age of 80 – racing in the OSCAAR Hot Rod division.
The highlight of his return was a very popular win, at Peterborough Speedway, at the end of July.
And when he wasn’t racing, he was a fixture at area speedways supporting members of his family and hanging out with his countless friends.
Here are some assorted photos of Bill Zardo and members of the Zardo / Shepherd racing families, over the years. Most of them were taken by longtime family friend Dave Franks.
A video interview with Bill Zardo Sr., filmed at Ohsweken Speedway this past August discussing his return to racing and his OSCAAR Hot Rod win at Peterborough, is on our Facebook page here.
On behalf of everyone at Inside Track Motorsport News, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Bill Zardo Sr.
