CAYUGA, ONTARIO (May 20, 2012) – The opening round in the 2012 Pro Bike & Sled Series presented by Wiseco Performance Products took place at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park during its Victoria Day Weekend Challenge, and the drag race series final round was a true Pro Bike versus Pro Sled match-up on the quarter-mile track.
And after the final Pete Stewart of Toronto, Ontario found himself in the winner’s circle with his Pro Bike entry besting Chris Bondi of Aurora, Ontario with his Pro Sled.
“We had a great day today,” said Stewart of his victory and his first race in PBSS competition. “We put in a new clutch Friday when we got here, but I wasn’t happy with it, so we put the old one back in and it worked better.
“From then on it was smooth sailing.”
Stewart qualified his Suzuki GSXR in ninth spot in the line-up, and eliminated number four qualifier Pro Bike rider Bob McDonald of Woodstock, Ontario, number two qualifier Kevin McKay of Ingersoll, Ontario, also in Pro Bike, and got a bye run in round three to meet with Bondi in the final.
Bondi, riding his 2012 Skidoo, qualified sixth in the field, and took out Pro Bike rider and number one qualifier John Orfanidis of Toronto, Ontario in the first round, rode through a bye in the second round, and took out number five qualifier Ted Glinny of Milton, Ontario on his Pro Bike entry in round three, posting a day’s personal best of 8.774, 144.92 on his Pro Sled.
But Bondi fouled in the final, giving the win to the Raceworks-sponsored Suzuki of Stewart, who rode to an 8.796, 143.75.
Bondi leads Pro Bike & Sled Series 2012 Championship Point Award Series with 298 points, followed by Glinny with 278 points. Third is the Beachville, Ontario Pro Bike team of Danny Staples and Kevin McKay with 260 points, Pro Bike rider Alex Cassels of Sundridge, Ontario is next with 257 points, and John Orfanidis is fifth with 240 points.
