June 9 2014– Ayr, ON – Jake Ott, Driver of the #60 Meineke Car Care Centres / Mackay Heating and Cooling Dodge opened the inaugural event of the 2014 racing season at Sauble Speedway with quite a notable performance.
The fans of the “Juice Box” were treated to a perfect race day as Jake was able to keep the purple crowd pleaser “Barney” up front on the charts throughout the practice session. Come qualifying time Jake captured the pole on his first lap but come the second lap he piloted the purple #60 into the record books for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series beating Steve Robblee’s old fastest time record handily.
The Fast Five qualifying order would see Jake start outside pole of the 100 lap feature. The race was fast paced and the yellow rag never flew much thru the middle. Jake remained relatively quiet on the radio during the middle laps as he negotiated lapped traffic attempting to keep the #81 of Shawn McGlynn in reach.
” I just focused on running good times and saving my stuff, I knew the caution come out.”
And it did Jake was able to restart outside of the #81 a couple of times with the last restart between the duo resulting in contact enough for the right front tire to go down on McGlynn’s ride.
“Shawn wasn’t letting up on the restarts and neither was I, I wasn’t gunna let him shove me up to the junk” Ott recalled.
Ott took the lead at lap 69 and held on to the finish of the event beating out Connelly and Allen who both put up a valiant fight to close out the event. This is Jake’s fourth win in the series and a huge come back from last year’s event where he finished fourteenth after being collected in an incident involving the #3 and the #31.
“It was redemption for us as the results of this raced bugged the hell out of me during the off season.”
The team faced a long week of heavy hearts going into this event as Jake’s number one fan his grandfather Gary Canniff passed away after a courageous battle with cancer and was laid to rest to Friday. In a post-race interview Jake stated “this race was for my Grandpa.”
