SOUTHAMPTON, ON- ‘Livewire’ Nick Goetz outlasted a field of Ontario’s top Ltd. Late Models in August 15th action at Sunset Speedway for the third time this season, securing his first division win in weekly competition since June 13th.
“This was exactly what this team needed – what an amazing feeling,” exclaimed Goetz upon clearing post-race technical inspection. “We’ve been fighting this car for weeks. It’s been good, but not great, and we’ve been killing ourselves trying to make it better. This makes all the hours worthwhile”
The fourth-year competitor survived a series of late-race restarts that saw a number of top runners sent to the rear after being involved in one of the many cautions between lap-25 and lap-35.
“Tonight was a wild one,” nodded Goetz in agreeance when asked about the final 10-laps. “Late in the race, I had [Spotter] Paul [Geniole Sr.] in my ear reminding me that we were good enough to take a run at the lead and to not get caught up in anything”
“It felt like, for a few laps, anyone at the front was getting spun,” added the Southampton, ON resident. “So, all we were concentrated on was moving forward and keeping all four corners on the car”
With three points races remaining at Sunset – in addition to a bevy of late-season invitational events – Goetz is hopeful that his Rick McColl-led team can work their way back to victory lane before the schedule is at its end.
“I want to finish strong. I think this car is good enough to win a couple more of these before the season is over,” says the confident up-and-comer. “There’s still a lot of racing to go – and I know that I have one of the best teams in the pits. We just have to make good decisions on and off the racetrack”
And, after struggling through the midway portion of the season, Goetz muses that a change in temperature just might have a positive impact on his NG Motorsports team.
“I’m not sure if it’s the car or the driver but we just couldn’t get things to work in the warm weather,” explains Goetz with a shrug.
“We were great in the spring, but as soon as summer moved in we just couldn’t seem to keep things rolling. So, hopefully we can catch a couple of cooler weather nights through the back end of the season and get this hot rod back up front where it belongs.”
Nick Goetz will be back in action at Sunset Speedway this Sunday, August 23rd when the APC United Late Model Series visits for Round 7 of their 2015 tour.
