INNISFIL, ON- After almost a month away from Sunset Speedway’s weekly Late Model division, ‘Livewire’ Nick Goetz showed no signs of rust in his NASCAR Whelen All American Series return on June 13th.
The Southampton, ON-based driver blitzed the field in time trials – earning his second pole award in three starts this season – before spending the entirety of the 35-lap event at the front of the talent-laden field en route to victory lane.
“This season has been a dream so far,” said Goetz when asked of his early-summer hot streak. “Saturday was an unbelievable run for us. Time Trials are something that we’ve really invested a lot of time in, and I’m thrilled that it’s starting to pay off”
“Qualifying is so important here,” continued ‘Livewire’. “This field is the best in the province – if you have to start deep, it’s awfully tough to make anything happen. We knew that coming into this season and [Crew Chief] Rick McColl has worked with me nonstop to get my qualifying times down and put us in position to contend for these wins”
With three full seasons of racing under his belt, Goetz is beginning to find the consistency that had plagued his earlier campaigns.
“I feel like a completely different driver than I was in my first three seasons,” offered Goetz with a smile. “If you had told me during my rookie year that I’d be standing here with two wins in our first three weeks on track – I’d tell you that you were crazy”
“I have all the confidence in this team and our equipment. For the first time in my career, I truly believe that I have a car capable of winning on any given night,” added the personable hotshoe. “It’s been a long road to get here – and I can’t thank every single person that helped us get this program off of the ground enough”
When asked about his hopes for a possible championship run, Goetz maintained the team’s goals are to continue their recent hot streak and allow the points standings to settle themselves.
“This division is amazing. Every spot you gain here means something – because it’s so hard to do. I just want to keep things moving in the right direction. I don’t want two strong weeks, I want a whole season of strong performances. I just want us to stay focused and keep doing all the things that have been working out so far. We’re in a great spot right now as far as the points standings are concerned, and I just want to make sure that we stay there.”
