INNISFIL, ON- Just one week after his frustrating start to the 2015 season, fourth-year Late Model competitor ‘Livewire’ Nick Goetz stormed to the forefront of Sunset Speedway’s Sauble Falls Tent & Trailer Park NASCAR Late Model division with a head-turning performance on May 9th.
The Southampton, ON driver opened up Week 2 by earning his first career pole award – with a blistering lap of 14.700 seconds. From there, Goetz led nearly every lap of competition to earn his first career Sunset Speedway feature victory.
“This is everything I’ve wanted from the moment I started racing these cars 4 years ago,” exclaimed an elated Goetz post-race. “It’s so insanely hard to beat the guys on this roster. If you want a strong finish, you have to roll your sleeves up and work for it – and that’s exactly what we did tonight!”
When asked about his caution-filled run on May 2nd, Goetz explained that the key to moving past his opening night dissatisfaction was not dwelling on it.
“Last Saturday was a nightmare. I came out like a bull in a china shop,” said Goetz. “Anything that could go wrong did go wrong. As soon as I got back to the trailer at the end of the night, all I wanted to do was forget that it ever happened”
“After outings like that, it’s really important to have a short memory. We knew that we were better than what we showed last weekend. This feels like redemption, tonight”
The NG Motorsports founder admitted that it was the team’s strategy all along to try for a quick start to their 2015 campaign.
“We were so hungry to get to victory lane this season. The plan was to come out and lay everything on the line early,” said Goetz. “I didn’t have the year that I was hoping for in 2014, and I knew that it would make all the difference to come out and find some success early”
After reconfiguring his program over the off-season, Goetz hopes some key personnel changes will be enough to push his upstart operation towards championship contention.
“I give all the credit in the world to the guys at McColl Racing Enterprises – they’ve been incredible,” beamed the personable up-and-comer post-race. “From the first week they spent building this car to the moment I rolled out for time trials tonight they’ve been patient and supportive”
“Rick [McColl] is going to head up our program this year and I couldn’t be more excited. He’s completely turned this thing around. As soon as the car was in the trailer after opening night, he already had a strategy ready for Night 2”
“Everything is really coming together now. If we can keep things up, I’m confident that we can get this car back to victory lane in a hurry.”
‘Livewire’s next assignment will bring him to Sunset Speedway’s inaugural Spring Velocity weekend – where he will hope to return to victory lane in a 75-lap Ltd. Late Model invitational. Details for the event, including gate times and ticket prices, can be found at www.SunsetSpeedway.ca.
