INNISFIL, ON- After weathering weeks of bad luck, Nick Goetz enjoyed a top-6 finish in an impressive outing in Sunset Speedway’s Limited Late Model ‘Super Series’ on May 24th.
“We’ve been waiting on this one”, said Goetz. “After our solid run at the Spring Derby, we’ve fought everything from motor troubles to over-anxious competitors. It feels good to be back in the top-10”
The second round in Sunset’s ‘Super Series’ marked Crew Chief Graham Annis’ return to Goetz operation after a week’s absence, and the pair clicked immediately.
“Graham’s been working with me for almost two years now, and the guy’s an absolute genius”, noted Goetz. “We have great chemistry together. He’s able to fine tune this car exactly the way I need it, which is phenomenal. It’s tough to replace him when he’s not able to be here”
‘Livewire’ turned in a strong run through qualifying, setting the stage for the turn-around the NG Motorsports team so badly needed.
“We knew we had a good car heading into the feature”, said Goetz. “It was all about strategy. Dodging the early wrecks and taking care of our stuff. If I could get to halfway without getting caught in someone else’s mess, I was sure I had something for the top-10”
Goetz took the green from inside row-5, and worked to remain within the top-10 for the duration of the 50-lap event.
The Southampton, ON driver escaped a number of early-race incidents unscathed, as the field thinned out during a caution-laden first half.
“I wasn’t sure if our race was going to make it past 25 laps”, chuckled Goetz. “There were guys door slamming one another 5 laps into the race. I couldn’t understand it. My spotter did a great job coaching me through it. Once we hit that long green flag run just past the halfway mark, the car came to me”
Goetz worked his way to the 6th position, and appeared to be closing on the top-5 when he ran out of laps.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be as happy to finish 6th”, beamed the third-year competitor. “After the last 3 weeks, we just needed a little bit of positivity. We’ve fought through some bad luck this year, but a run like tonight reminds us of how good of a program we really have”
“We’ll be back next Saturday with a top-5 car”, added Goetz.
