PETERBOROUGH, ON- Riding a streak of three straight top-10 finishes, Mike Nelson is ready for his return to Flamboro Speedway for Round 4 of the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup schedule. The Peterborough, ON driver is hoping a strong finish can inject his No. 85 R&J Machine Dodge into championship contention.
“I love racing at Flamboro”, says Nelson, flashing a smile “it’s been good to us in the past. It’s just a track I feel comfortable at. I drive it a lot like Peterborough. I think there are a lot of similarities between the two tracks”
Nelson will have to fall back on his experience at Flamboro for July 19th’s event, as his team has not had the chance to test following a late-race crash in Round 3 of the tour at Capital City Speedway.
“I’ve practically lived in the shop from the moment we got this car home from Capital City”, explains Nelson. “The damage was a lot worse than we had initially thought. The entire rear end of the car had to be rebuilt from where we hit the wall. Everything behind the rear wheels had to be replaced”
“Unfortunately, that means we haven’t had any chance to go testing. So, we’ll be relying on our setup notes from when we raced there in June and came home with a top-5”
In just his second full season with the LOSC, Nelson will enter July 19th’s event 5th in championship points, as he continues to work his way towards contending for his first career LOSC title.
“I was so proud of the way our team persevered at Capital City”, says Nelson. “We absolutely junked this car, and still fought back and salvaged a 7th place finish. Because of that, we’re 5th in points and closer than ever to a run at a tour championship. We just have to keep it up, and keep our foot on the gas”
“Momentum is on our side now, I feel great heading into Flamboro. If we could bring home a podium finish, it would do a lot for our championship run. That’s what the goal is for this weekend”
