PETERBOROUGH, ON- Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup sophomore Mike Nelson will be back in action on Saturday, August 23rd for Round 6 of the 2014 season at Flamboro Speedway.
Nelson will be looking to rebound from a frustrating outing at Peterborough Speedway in Round 5 of the tour, which saw the No. 85 R&J Machine/Dohjo Muay Thai Dodge battle back to a 10th place finish after suffering heavy front-end damage in a mid-race collision.
“We’re all ready to put Peterborough behind us”, says Nelson, “it was a bad deal, and a race that we definitely hoped would turn out a lot different. But, our focus is on Flamboro now, and we’re focusing on what we can do to bring home another top-5 finish”
The Peterborough, ON driver has yet to finish outside of the top-10 this season, and will look to improve upon his time trial efforts at Flamboro.
“Every race this year has been a bit of a ‘come from behind’ story for us”, explains Nelson. “I haven’t been able to lay down the qualifying attempts that I need to, so we’ve been starting deep every week”
“Hopefully, I can make life a little bit easier at Flamboro and knock down a decent lap that will help us start in the front half of the field”
The former Mini Stock standout continues to work closely with current NASCAR Canadian Tire Series competitor Joey McColm and Thunder Car division standout John Baker Jr. in formulating a package for Flamboro’s tricky confines.
“Joey and John have been huge additions to my program and I can’t thank them enough”, says Nelson. “John was a huge part of our top-5 the last time we were at Flamboro, and Joey has been helping me with rear-end geometry this week. I’ve learned a tonne from both of them”
“I also have to thank my Dad and my uncle Daryl Taylor for all they’ve done”, continues Nelson. “It’s been a team effort just getting this car back together after wrecking it at Peterborough. Hopefully our hard work pays off this weekend”
Nelson enters this weekend’s event 7th in points, just 9 markers back of a birth in the top-5 with 3 events left on the 2014 schedule.
Details for Saturday’s race, including gate times and ticket prices, can be found at www.FlamboroSpeedway.net.
