PETERBOROUGH, ON- Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup sophomore Mike Nelson is ready to end his 2014 season on a high note, as the tour prepares its return to Flamboro Speedway as part of the annual Oktoberfest Classic on October 4th and 5th.
“Flamboro has been our strongest track this season,” says Nelson. “We’ve been stronger in every trip we’ve made there this season. Every time we unload, we have a whole new bag of tricks to try out”
“We’ve been living in the shop, trying to find ways to make this car faster. Researching, poring over notes. We want to be able to give our sponsors and fans the best run of our season this weekend”
Nelson’s statistics at Flamboro in 2014 are enviable. In 3 starts this year, the former Mini Stock standout has yet to finish outside of the top-5.
“Flamboro is our adoptive home track,” jokes Nelson. “Joey McColm and John Baker Jr. have been pretty instrumental with bringing us up to speed there. We were quick the first time we raced there in June. Since then, every time we’ve gone to Flamboro we’ve been bringing our lap times down. I still think we can get a lot more out of the car there”
With the Oktoberfest event serving as the season finale for the tour, Nelson knows the time is now to make his final push for a top-5 finish in the final points standings.
“A top-5 finish in points was our goal this season, and I feel as though that’s very much within our reach,” offers the confident up-and-comer. “We’re only 11 points out of the top-5 right now. Obviously, there are 3 incredibly talented guys that we have to leapfrog in order to get there, but with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work I think it’s doable”
“We just can’t make any mistakes this weekend,” continues Nelson. “Our season has been defined by strong runs that have been held back by the tiniest mistakes. This weekend, we need to be perfect”
“I’ve struggled a little bit in time trials, and that’s just about the most prototypical way to put yourself behind the eight-ball. I’m confident we can get that worked out this weekend, and if we can, there’s no doubt in my mind we can be in the conversation at the end of 100-laps.”
